Britomart is home to bold and evocative public artworks, as well as an ever-changing array of temporary exhibitions. Throughout the neighbourhood, we’re fortunate to hold work by many of Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading Māori artists. During Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), we wanted to take a moment to kōrero about the meaning behind each one 🌀 If you look closely, the details will do a lot of the talking: pūhoro (traditional flowing design pattern) that speaks to a connection with water, shooting water jets that echo the movements of pipi (shellfish), intentional palettes that merge sea and sky, and compositions that pay homage to whakapapa. Swipe through for more information about each work, or head to the link in our bio ➡️ 📍Britomart #Britomart #TeWikiOTeReoMāori #ToiMāori #ToiWhakairo #NewZealandArt Waitī Waitā (formerly known as Skylid — we’re so sorry for the incorrect naming on the slide, and thank you to those who flagged it!) by Graham Tipene (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Hauā, Ngāti Manu), 2026. “The inspiration for this work here was actually the threshold [silver centre] and the transition of the Waihorotiu Stream [left side] to Te Waitematā [right side]. So, in effect, it’s actually a map. The designs are a little bit different either side to reflect the different behaviours of water — water in a stream as opposed to water in an ocean. “So the detail for the design — the bigger part of the design is a pūhoro, which is closely connected to water. We use pūhoro on waka to talk about the frictionless motion through waka building and the science of that and we use pūhoro to talk about the ocean and water. And so we have used pūhoro here, to reflect about that direct connection to the water — both the stream that used to flow here (it still flows today, it’s just underground) and the Waitematā Harbour. The difference in the Waitematā Harbour design is that there is whakarare all the way through it, to recognise the disruption — first of all, the land reclamation out into the harbour, and then, of course, everything that is happening in the harbour as well. Just lots of different aspects to the water as a har

This week we gathered a few of our most loyal Ōtautahi supporters from Kotahi, our giving community – in the most generous way. Vibes were high and the welcome was warm as Andrew Vincent and Leaanne O'Sullivan shared their beautiful home and art collection with our friends. GM Jessica Palalagi spoke about the potent creativity bubbling away in Christchurch – and 2024 Laureate Lonnie Hutchinson and 2025 Laureate Cheryl Lucas kept the room entertained with stories from their creative journeys. The manaaki was real with drinks by @craggyrange winery, @sawmillbrewery, and sobercurious_af, and incredible kai from local legends @blinkhornefoods4. Nights like this remind us exactly why we champion artists and the arts community 🖤 📸 by @emmabrittenden

✨It’s not every day that one of your best friends, @reuben_paterson, becomes an Arts Laureate. What a night! Thank you to the @theartsnz for creating a space so full of joy, aroha, and pride. The buzz was absolutely incredible, a night of big loves and heartbursts, glitter and gratitude. And lucky us, we get to do it all again tomorrow (Tuesday) for the opening of Reuben Paterson’s new show The Tree Collectors at @gowlangsford . Here’s an excerpt from my essay Leap of Faith, which accompanies the show: “Reuben Paterson stages encounters meant to be felt. To look is to be looked at, to desire is to be unsettled, to touch is to risk breaking. The works exist in relation, insisting that we too are multiple, that we too hold contradictions. They remind us that beauty can overwhelm, that desire can be a form of thought. They ask us to project ourselves into the cosmos, to imagine what cannot yet be seen, to grant emotional interiority to stars and exoplanets as sites of possibility, places where life might exist or begin anew. In doing so, they open questions about Earth’s future, the continuation of our species, and the ways we imagine life beyond our world.” Hari huritau season, awards, exhibitions … what a time to be alive, e hoa. ✨
