Explore London through public sculpture
19 - 27 September 2026

POSTS STORIES REELS

What makes a monument monumental?

Is it scale, permanence and power? Or is it the feelings it carries, the stories it makes visible and the connections it creates between people and place?

At the London Sculpture Week Symposium 2026, Reframing Monumentality: Contemporary Sculptural Practices in the Public Realm, artists and curators explored these questions through conversations on representation, relation, affect and the changing role of public art.

The symposium audio recordings are now available on the London Sculpture Week digital guide on Bloomberg Connects.

Listen back to the conversations and explore what monumentality might mean today.

We enjoyed the last rays of sunshine at our recent Sculpture Switch: Sculpture in the City tour, brilliantly led by @thelinelondon Artist, @abigailfallisart 🌞

As part of @londonsculptureweek (19th – 27th September), The Line and Sculpture in the City came together for an exchange of artist-led tours, with artists from each programme leading a tour of the other site.

Through these exchanges, Sculpture Switch creates a space for one artist to encounter the work of others as well as inviting audiences to see sculpture anew.

We asked artists, galleries, partners and people working across the sculpture community to tell us what London Sculpture Week means to them.

From making connections and sharing ideas to creating space for conversations around sculpture, here’s what they had to say.

The week may be over but the sculptures are still out across London to explore. Discover the works and hear from artists and partners on the London Sculpture Week digital guide on @bloombergconnects.

Last Friday, artists, curators, academics and practitioners came together at The Warburg Institute for the fourth London Sculpture Week Symposium, Reframing Monumentality: Contemporary Sculptural Practices in the Public Realm.

Across the afternoon, we explored what sculpture can do in public space and what happens when we look beyond the monument as a fixed object or symbol of permanence. Conversations moved through unmonumental practices, representation, relation and affect, opening up different ways of thinking about how sculpture can occupy, shape and respond to the spaces we share.

Thank you to all our speakers, contributors and everyone who joined us and helped make the afternoon such a thoughtful and generous conversation.

Organised by London Sculpture Week partners East Bank, Fourth Plinth, Frieze Sculpture, Sculpture in the City and The Line, and hosted by The Warburg Institute in collaboration with CREATURE at London Metropolitan University.

From London 2012 to East Bank today, a look back at 14 years of public art across Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Last Thursday, we joined Sam Wilkinson, UCL Director of Public Art and Director of Culture and Community Engagement at UCL East, for a walking tour exploring the Park’s evolving public art landscape.

From London 2012 Olympic commissions to newer East Bank works, Sam shared personal reflections on the legacy of the Games and the role public art continues to play across the Park.

Frieze Sculpture, after dark.

On Monday evening, Frieze Sculpture curator Fatoş Üstek took us through Regent’s Park for two night tours, looking at the works in a completely different light.

Here’s a glimpse of the evening. 🌙

As part of The Wick’s London Sculpture Week special, this week’s #Spotlight is Maya Rose Edwards, the North Yorkshire-born artist making public sculpture through place, participation and collaboration with rural communities and tradespeople.

Working across sculpture, live art, site-specific intervention and research-based collaboration, Edwards explores how labour and industry shape environments, often working with farmers, sailors, hedgelayers and stonemasons.

Edwards is championed by Stella Ioannou Hon FRIBA, Artistic Director of Sculpture in the City and Founding Director of LACUNA, who first encountered their work through Kissing Gate.

Ioannou describes Edwards as “carving a distinctive niche in the contemporary art world”, adding: “They stand out as an artist with a clear and evolving voice, using accessible, participatory art to question boundaries, connect communities, and reconsider how we inhabit and share space.”

Read the full feature at the link in bio.

This special edition of Spotlight celebrates the artists championed by the five partners of London Sculpture Week, bringing together the Fourth Plinth, East Bank, Frieze Sculpture, Sculpture in the City and The Line.

The Line - Public Art in East London

We’ll also be selling The Line - Public Art in East London during the symposium, with sales supporting The Line and its ongoing exhibition and engagement programmes.
Published by Phaidon Monacelli, the book celebrates The Line’s 10th anniversary, bringing together more than 150 colour photographs - from eye-level views of the artworks to spectacular aerial drone shots - that explore and contextualise the route.

Contributing writers include Megan Piper in conversation with Gus Casely-Hayford, Emma Dabiri, Jes Fernie and Andrew Jones.

A beautiful way to discover more about public art across East London and support The Line’s work in the process.
The book will be available at an offer price of £30 at the symposium.

If you can’t make it to the symposium but would like to purchase a copy, you can find it online via the link in bio.

On Friday at the London Sculpture Week Symposium, we’ll be holding a book sale with copies of Jo Baring’s new book Totem: The Untold Story of Sculpture available to purchase.

Jo will also be joining us as our keynote speaker, bringing the afternoon to a close with reflections on sculpture and monumentality.
