The Tacoma Narrows Bridge on Tuesday morning with colorful autumn colors on the Tacoma side and the Gig Harbor. It was pretty calm morning as we departed Tacoma industrial airport back to Boeing Field in the Family Stationwagon. The original Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed in 1940 during the wind storm.

According to History Com —-The Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapses due to high winds on November 7, 1940. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was built in Washington during the 1930s and opened to traffic on July 1, 1940. It spanned the Puget Sound from Gig Harbor to Tacoma, which is 40 miles south of Seattle. Sleek and slender, it was the third longest suspension bridge in the world at the time, covering 5,959 feet.

Engineers of the time believed that the design, even though it exceeded ratios of length, depth and width that had previously been standard, was completely safe. Following the collapse, it was revealed that the engineers had not properly considered the aerodynamic forces that were in play at the location during a period of strong winds. At the time of construction, such forces were not commonly taken into consideration by engineers and designers.

On November 7, high winds buffeted the area and the bridge swayed considerably. The first failure came at about 11 a.m., when concrete dropped from the road surface. Just minutes later, a 600-foot section of the bridge broke free. By this time, the bridge was being tossed back and forth wildly. At one time, the elevation of the sidewalk on one side of the bridge was 28 feet above that of the sidewalk on the other side. Even though the bridge towers were made of strong structural carbon steel, the bridge proved no match for the violent movement, and collapsed. Subsequent investigations and testing revealed that the bridge was vulnerable to vibrations generated by wind. When the bridge experienced strong winds from a certain direction, the frequency oscillations built up to such an extent that collapse was inevitable.

Have you seen the Washington Park Aboretum lately with the colorful fall foliage. Yesterday Joshua and I flew around Capital Hill to the Aboretum to see the Japanese Garden and the drive to the north end of the park. I think another week the color will be more brilliant colors as for now you can see in the video. We flew afterwards to see the University of Washington and area before returning home over Capital Hill and North Beacon Hill. #fall #fallvibes #washingtonparkarboretum #seattle #pacificnorthwestisbest taken in Washington Park Arboretum by @longbachnguyen

Yesterday morning it was an ugly weather day for flight training in Caldwell NJ or NJ area due to low ceiling and rain from the remnant of the hurricane 🌀 that came up from the Guld of Mexico. We decided to fly east to Connecticut for clear weather. We flew Big Paws 🐾 Kodiak 100 with their volunteer pilots on their Kodiak flight training. We spent nearly 8 hours of training for two pilots with landings at Groton airport and Quonset State airport. This was our view of Groton and Mystic coastline after departing Groton airport. It was beautiful to see the coast and all those villages and the colorful foliage. #pilotstotherescue #mysticconnecticut #newengland #fallcolors #kodiak100 taken in Mystic, Connecticut by @longbachnguyen

Over the years I have donated my time and fuel, the Family Stationwagon or the Little Scooter to folks with terminal illnesses or special needs, and SAR for missing airplane. Few days ago one of my friend asked if I can take a parents of missing hiker who passed away in 2020 and still missing on Mount Rainier. Yesterday I got to meet the parents and their friend who wanted to see the last know position of their son which was the water bottle only by Carbon Glacier. We flew over the site around 7000 feet so they can get the perspective and memories of their son. Afterwards we flew on the west side of Mount Rainier for them to see that their son resting place has a spectacular view as seen in this video. When I got back I searched the name of the missing hiker.

According to ABC NEWS It was Sam Dubal (October 2020)

• Who: Sam Dubal, a 33-year-old University of Washington anthropology professor.
• What happened: He went missing after hiking the Mother Mountain Loop out of the Mowich Lake Trailhead. He started his hike on Friday, October 9, 2020, and was scheduled to return on Saturday, October 10, but was reported missing on October 12.
• Search effort: Extensive ground, dog, drone, and helicopter searches (including US Air Force and NPS crews) faced severe weather and snowstorms, and he was not found. You can view community updates via the Reddit PCT Discussion on Sam Dubal. #mtrainier #flying #pilotlife #washingtonexplored #iphonevideo taken in Mt. Rainier by @longbachnguyen

Not far from Snoqualmie Pass lies some beautiful valley and peaks either by hiking or by plane. In this video we flew Chikamin Ridge, Chikamin Lake, Lemah Mountain, Chimney Rock Peaks, Overcoat Peak and glacier, Iceberg Lake, Burntboot Peak, and Mount Hinman. It was so calm that we just flew around at 80-90 kts and enjoyed the stunning view. We flew back to Boeing Field after 2 hours in the Family Stationwagon.

According to Wikipedia Lemah Mountain is a mountain peak in the Snoqualmie Crest, a part of the North Cascades Mountains, of the US state of Washington, most noted for its five distinct summits. It is approximately 7.7 miles (12.4 km) from Snoqualmie Pass. The name Lemah comes from the Chinook Jargon word Lemah, in turn derived from a French word, le main, meaning “hand”.[4] Lemah Mountain formed by rocks crumpled into mountains by the Cascadia subduction zone where the Juan de Fuca and North American Plates meet. [citation needed].

The mountain has five separate summits, the highest of which is more than 7,480 feet (2,280 m) above sea level. Lemah One (6,960’), Lemah Two (7,280’), Main Peak (7,512’, also called Lemah Three), Lemah Four (7,200’) and Lemah Five (7,040’) make up these peaks. Each summit has an individual ascent path. Main Peak, the highest of the five towers, was first ascended in 1923.[3]

The Lemah Glacier rests on the east slope of the mountain, and is mostly divided into three remaining sections. Lemah Creek, a stream named after the mountain, drains this glacier and eventually meets the Cooper River. Burnt Boot Creek drains another flank of Lemah Mountain, and it is a tributary of the Cooper River as well. On the western flank of Lemah is a small lake called Avalanche Lake. #lemahmountain #chimneyrock #overcoatpeak #cascademountains #aerialvideo taken in Lemah Mountain by @longbachnguyen
