High up in the Mt. Baker Snoqualmie National Forest, the historic Three Fingers Lookout just received a major restoration, and Issaquah Lumber was honored to play a part in its story.
Re-siding a fire lookout at nearly 7,000 feet is no small feat. For the past decade, volunteers carried most materials up on their backs. This year, after three years of planning and paperwork, they finally secured a helicopter lift to bring new siding to the summit. At one point, a bundle of lumber even slipped about 30 feet down the mountainside, and the crew had to rope down the rocky slope to retrieve it, because when you’re restoring a historic structure, every piece matters.
Anything that didn’t make the helicopter flights had to be hauled in by foot: 15.7 miles with 6,070 feet of elevation gain — 8.7 miles on bike and 7 miles hiking.
Because the lookout is on the National Historic Register, the Forest Service required materials that matched the 1930s originals as closely as possible. When the crew chose Issaquah Lumber to source those exact specs, we were honored to help preserve a lookout that has watched over Washington’s backcountry for nearly a century.
A huge thank you to the volunteers who completed the onsite work, and to Forest Service archaeologist Paul Alford, who secured the funding to make the siding restoration possible.
