A couple of years ago, my Art History colleague @kirstenjswenson asked me to contribute a map design to the book she and her co-editor Rebecca Uchill were working on. I was tasked with highlighting the locales and corresponding art covered in the book to provide an orienting snapshot of the contents to follow. The symbol system in the map purposely avoids realistic scale to set each area and art to a similar level of hierarchy. I’m so excited to finally get to share it because the book was released today(!!)- available both in print and with open access online through Amherst College Press and I’m so proud and grateful to have been asked to work on this. Thank you and congrats, Kirsten and Rebecca!

Delighted to share that my work “Family Touch” was selected as a finalist in the 2026 Data is Art competition at The University of Virginia School of Data Science. The project will be shown along with 7 other finalists in their public gallery during the 2026-7 school year. You can view my work and the other finalists on their website and vote for a people’s choice award (No pressure to vote for mine! 😅)

For this comic strip assignment, I wanted to tell the story of chaos that happens in my house daily and the feeling of being progressively more overwhelmed during the day by the attention my 1 and 4 year old (+ dog) require, followed by the silence, a reassuring hug and then the end-of-day gratefulness for the chaos.

Gotta practice line work and building color in Procreate, but proud of the story I could tell without words. by @longnamedesign

In last week’s assignment, we created an editorial illustration based on an article. Of the options provided I selected the piece on going to Mars from the New Yorker (pictured at the end). It had a sardonic tone that I wanted to capture - like woah cool there’s no gravity so we can all dunk, while being blasted by a fatal dust cloud. This was the first time I’ve ever in all my years being an artist worked in gouache, so the learning curve was steep. I definitely overworked it. Also astronauts- not easy to draw! I’ve been really loving being something of a novice but am remembering that I really struggle with restraint in my work. So students, if I ever give you a critique about showing more restraint or that you showed restraint- please know it’s one of my biggest struggles too. by @longnamedesign

New work for my illustration class, capturing a quality from our zodiac sign. I am actually not a workaholic but I am stubborn and often find myself drowning in work I didn’t want to say no to. Not crazy about the tail of this Capricorn “sea goat” because I think I unintentionally made it look like a chicken but I did enjoy the therapeutic hours it took to practice some shading techniques with pen, and the little symbols I incorporated into this tarot card-style composition. I’m actually so inspired by the process sketching process during this endeavor- it’s been a while since I’ve really felt I needed to do hundreds of thumbnail sketches before the final work. It’s cool when the final piece feels so precious and final and I can’t just move around pixels if I get something wrong. Fun.

Feeling inspired by all the illustrators in my classes, so I decided to switch it up and take an illustration class through RISD continuing ed. Fun to be embracing some new image-making, but long way to go to find myself a style! This was fun and a nice set up for my son’s first birthday next month 🎉 by @longnamedesign

Reallly crazy proud of my Design 3: Explorations class and their work on this full class collaborative exhibit.
1. Design a poster inspired by “human error” a reaction to overprocessed AI imagery.
2. Pick a classmate’s poster and create a response design to it.
3. In teams, develop the installation, branding, catalog, process video and social media documentation.

They killed it! Was a hard project and they definitely probably hated me at multiple points of the team portion, but they delivered. Stop by Mahoney any time before 3/26 and try to draw the perfect circle.
