POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
This month’s Longsight Table is Tatreez at the Sofra 🧵

For centuries, tatreez has been a way for Palestinians to stitch their stories, villages and identity into cloth. Come spend an evening with us learning about it and stitching your own napkin to take home. After that, we’ll share a Palestinian dinner together, with a mandatory makloube flip! (If you know you know)

Sofra means “spread” in Arabic, so come hungry. See you soon!

p.s. spaces are limited, and a small contribution at booking helps us avoid empty seats and food waste on the night. If your plans change, please release your ticket so someone else can take your place. Link in bio.

Part of The Longsight Table, twelve dinners, twelve themes, one community. 7/12

Something new is starting at Longsight Art Space. 🧘🏽‍♀️

We are hosting a 12-week Dharma Yoga class with Kate Weston, every Monday from 11:30am to 12:30pm, starting 19 October.

Dharma Yoga combines movement, breathwork and stillness. It is rooted in the teachings of Sri Dharma Mittra and brings together the body and mind in a way that is accessible to absolutely everyone — whether you have never rolled out a yoga mat before or have been practising for years.

Kate trained at the Dharma Yoga Centre in New York City and is bringing that practice right here to Longsight.

Spaces are limited and RSVP is required.

Book your spot at longsight.cas@gmail.com or leave a message at 07852509215. taken in Longsight Art Space by @longsightartspace

'The soil hums ultra sound' is a group sound art exhibition unearthing resonant stories of migration, belonging, and love. Three installations by artists Aliyah Hussain, Jessica El Mal, and Paul Nataraj collate an invitation to listen beneath the surface, where memories of displacement, symbols of resilience, and the blossoms of friendship take root.

✶ Opening evening: Thu 19 Nov, 6:30-9pm at Longsight Art Space ✶

The exhibition is curated by Brit Seaton and will also provide a gathering space for a live performance Listening Event (Sat 21 Nov) and an intimate Poetry Brunch workshop (Sun 22 Nov), as part of a special public programme. [Tickets available soon!]

The exhibition presents new invocations of:

✶ 'Jal Tarang / Waves in Water' by @aliyah.a.hussain
✶ 'We Sound Each Other' by @paul_stan_nataraj
✶ 'Our Dreams of Jasmine' by @jessica_elmal

Can you help us create long lasting furniture for the art space on 29th and 30th October?

Gain experience working with your hands, and give back to the community with artist and architect Shahed Saleem as we repurpose the sculpture he made for Our Longsight Festival into indoor furniture for Longsight Art Space. We will be turning the timber into seating and storage for usage forevermore 🪑

We are looking for helpers 12pm - 4pm on Thursday 29th and 10am - 4pm on Friday 30th October.

If you think you can help, please dm us or email longsight.cas@gmail.com with your availability and any relevant information about your skills or experience. taken in Longsight Art Space by @longsightartspace

Another cosy MSJI Film Club evening last week 🌊🎞️

We watched With Hasan in Gaza together, travelling through Gaza as it was in 2001, and reflecting afterwards on everything that Gaza has resisted since, and all the ways ordinary life continues in spite of occupation.

Thank you to everyone who came and watched with us, and raised funds for @bridge.of.solidarity 🤍 & a big thank you to @longsightartspace for the beautiful space, as always!

** Next screening will be 12 November** We’re very excited about this one… 👀🍿 by @longsightartspace

delighted to share we've received ACE funding to present a programme of sound art at @longsightartspace this autumn-winter 2026-7!

coming up are two exhibitions, a premiere of a new artist film, live experimental performances and workshops, featuring a constellation of artists based across the north west.

presenting:

✶ The soil hums ultra sound
✶ The body is an aerial
✶ Years from now, I'll be here

with @aliyah.a.hussain @paul_stan_nataraj @jessica_elmal @binkbulth @lapalacemusic @danielleswindells @brit_sea @sophiaharari @leohermitt and more to be announced

with huge thanks to @sa__rizwan at Longsight Art Space, @soundarthannah, @kymaraakinpelumi, @kop_zd4n and Lara at @workingwith___ for their incredible support and consultation behind the scenes

the impulse for quiet time arose from a sustained period of ill health and fatigue, of stillness and heightened sensitivity, when listening became deeper and a space for renewed connection and presence.

excited to share these stories and signals at long last

with love,

These are the people of Longsight. The ones who never left and the ones who arrived and never wanted to. The aunties who feed you like it’s their job. The neighbours who know about all of your struggles and are there with anything and everything. A community that was never defined by a postcode or a boundary. Just people, making it home. 🤍

Two weekends ago, 2,813 of us came together to celebrate exactly that.

A film premiere made with local residents. A day in the park where 2,500 people showed up, for free, to watch, dance, make things and sit with each other. A community dinner that was meant to seat 120. We fed 230. Because that is what happens when you actually show up for a community and a community shows up back.

Longsight is one of the most diverse places in Manchester. It is also one of the most under-celebrated. Our festival exists to change that. Not from the outside looking in, but from the inside, led by the people who live here, work here, were born here, or arrived here and chose to stay.

This year’s festival was delivered in partnership with over 30 local organisations, 35 volunteers, artists, performers, chefs, makers and facilitators, most of them from right here in Longsight and Manchester, with a few brilliant people who travelled to be part of it. Every stall, every workshop, every performance was community-led.

Thank you to Better We CIC, Women’s Voices CIC, Originally.Black, Rise & Flourish, 422 Community Hub, Odopa Cultural Group, Across Ummah CIC, Afrocats, Manchester Museum, Longsight Library, The Christie NHS Trust, Prevent Breast Cancer, Manchester Bangladeshi Women’s Organisation, Victoria Baths, Citizens Advice Manchester, Arab British Centre, Creative City / CleanupUK, MSM Powerhouse, BeLongsight, The Whitworth, Dishoom, One Chattogram and every individual who gave their time, energy and heart to this weekend.

Supported by Manchester City Council, Groundswell, Westhill Endowment Fund, Great Places Housing Association and the Arab British Centre / Freelands Foundation.

The set design for the community dinner was done by Sara Edilbe (@edilbsara)

🌊 BEYOND THE SHORE 🐠

I’m excited to share that I’m opening a solo exhibition of mini woven textile works exploring marine ecology and the fragile beauty of our shores. The series translates waves, tide lines, and coastal textures into woven surfaces — with traces of marine life concealed within the thread.

A huge thank you to my co-curators Saman Rizwan and Nadia Sultana, and to Longsight Art Space for this wonderful collaboration and support.

📍 Longsight Art Space, 89 Northmoor Road, Manchester M12 5RT
🗓 21–30 September 2026

Hope to see you there!

Introducing MSJI Film Club 📽️: a social cinema club, screening beautiful and political films from the Muslim world 🎞️🍿

We’re so excited to be kicking off this new offering with a screening of Usman Riaz’s ‘The Glassworker’ (شیشہ گر), Pakistan’s first hand-drawn animated feature film and official entry for Best International Feature at the 97th Academy Awards.

‘In a town divided by duty and class, Vincent, a glassmaker’s son, and Alliz, a violinist who is the colonel’s daughter, fall in love. As their bond grows, rising tensions between their families threaten to pull them apart. Brought to life through stunning hand-drawn animation, The Glassworker is a poetic tale of first love, family, and the price of staying true to your art.’

Grab your ticket from our bio and join us next Wednesday!

With gratitude to @filmhubnorth and @longsightartspace , whose support has helped bring MSJI Film Club to life 🌙🌙🌙 by @longsightartspace

Our Longsight Festival is a free three-day community festival celebrating the people and places that make Longsight, Manchester, what it is today. Having collaborated earlier this summer with Longsight Art Space on our As We Are Network Creative Exchange Day, we’re delighted to partner again to offer workshops at the Longsight Festival led by members of the As We Are Network, our artist development programme. These workshops have been supported by Manchester City Council’s Neighbourhood Fund.

Meet our facilitators!

Running A Map of Attention is Hanna Elmarakbi. Rather than asking which version of a place is true, this workshop on Friday 21 August asks how a place is produced through memory, media, experience and imagination, using found images, collage and mapping techniques.

Hana Elmarakbi is a British Egyptian writer. Her work spans literary fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction, exploring identity, mental health, and all forms of love.

Celebrate the significance of Arabic culture in Longsight and breathe new life into your old and unwanted clothes or fabric items on Saturday 22 August. Guided by Alaa Zalat, you will have the opportunity to upgrade unwanted fabric items using stencils of Arabic letters, symbols from ancient egypt, Moroccan zelige and Islamic calligraphy. Bring your tshirts, napkins, pencil cases, bags, whatever you would like to experiment with!

Alaa Zalat is a member of Rise and Flourish and has been working on fashion and environment for some six years. She is passionate about culture and upcycling fashion. This workshop is supported by The Arab British Centre’s As We Are, Might Have Been and Could Be programme focused on artist development.

Before our community dinner on Sunday 23 August, craft your own napkin using drawing, stitching and felt with artist Hannaa Hamdach. She will guide us through conversations about dinner, food and culture to transform motifs and symbols into your own beautifully unique napkin!

Hannaa Hamdache is a multi-disciplinary artist of mixed English and Algerian heritage. Her practice explores her mixed-background through family archival photographs, film, and food. She is part of DMZ Studio ba by @longsightartspace
