Wonky flower mug family :)

Messing around with new 3D printed dies for my handheld extruder and trying to reduce my colored clay canes by hand. Every mug got a bit wonkier in the process 🙃

More porcelain agateware cups and some plates made with the scraps :) This time I made these with a layered black and white gradient, though the gradient is hard to see at this stage. Hoping it will pop more after the firings 🤞

More porcelain strata-cut exploration & a set of handbuilt mugs made with the slices :) When I first started exploring strata-cut it was so hard for me to plan out a loaf in my head. It’s so fun to be able to think something up and have it animate how I imagined!

Surprised by this nerikomi slipcast experiment 🫣

I shared another video of the process for this black and white piece and felt pretty disappointed when the piece slowly became more and more covered in cracks, inside and out. As it got closer to bone dry, the top started splitting in multiple spots and I almost recycled it because I assumed the cracks would just get worse after firing.

I was so baffled when I took it out of the kiln after the bisque firing and found that the cracks were much less visible. After another firing, the cracks had almost disappeared on the outside, but were still quite prominent on the inside (no water will be held by this guy 😅).

I’m assuming that the shrinkage of the slip was a bit off from the patterned clay body, so the outer cracks were compressed when it shrunk, rather than pulled apart. If anyone else has thoughts, I’d love to hear them!

I’ve got a third try in the works, this time going back to the original clay combinations. No cracks on the inside so far 🤞 So much to learn from clay 🤯

Nerikomi beer stein made using a 1971 Duncan slip cast mold as a press mold. So fun opening the mold and seeing the relief! :)

Porcelain pendants made with colored slip :)

I started playing with this ceramic pendant making technique a few months ago and found myself making more and more, especially on days when I wasn’t up for bigger projects. After sharing some of my process, I had a few people reach out asking about my “cabochons.” I know nothing about jewelry and had to google the word, but ended up on a silversmithing and jewelry making side quest.

I also sent a few of these to @hivehousejewelry who made some really lovely silver pendants with them, and @discover.the.art.of who made some sweet necklaces 🥹

I have tons of these cabs, so at some point I’ll be making more jewelry and/or a mancala board. If you make jewelry or have other uses for these little guys, feel free to send me a dm! :)

Tulip mugs made with wonky colored porcelain strata-cut slices 🌷

These mugs cracked quite a bit on the surface after the glaze firing, but I don’t mind the character it gives them. The colored clay slices were laminated onto a solid slab of clay, so fortunately the cracks don’t impact their functionality.

Excited to give this animation another go at some point. :)

Snow Canyon in colored porcelain :) The colors will become much more vibrant after firing. If anyone has any tips for preventing warping (or thoughts on how I should use this slab, because I didn’t plan ahead of time 😅), I’d love to hear them!

1. Building a vase for an upcoming soda firing. I built this over the weekend, and it’s in the kiln today. It feels like pure magic that the vase has no cracks despite the speed drying (I normally take weeks to months to dry my colored clay work 🫣).
2. Marbled colored clay pinch cup.
