Don’t underestimate this. This is the dream of my lifetime. Yes, I used to read books and write constantly as a child, but it was because I wanted a different vision of the world, one where I and all real expressions of diverse Native people are normalized. And now, I will use this and everything else to help normalize Indigenous language CW. Everything is for a reason. Watch out, we’re coming — all of us, with all our gifts, and we’re not stopping.

It makes me so happy to share this announcement for 𐓣𐓤𐓪, my first novel, forthcoming from @oupressbooks. These honorific images inspired by the beauty of my great-grandmother Delilah Carr, share a sense of the “𐒻𐓤𐓪” of this novel, with 𐓣𐓤𐓪 meaning “my grandmother,” referring in this story to the children of the novel, who did not get to know her. 𐒻𐓤𐓪: the novel follows these children and their mother, the fictional Florence, a character who was inspired by my own grandmother (𐓣𐓤𐓪)! So you can see the echoes of these grandmothers, as we always feel them. While this novel is primarily set in the 1950s and does not contain very much Osage language, I am greatly pleased that the title is in this language, allowing me to share an Osage word I have had all along, since birth, way before getting to begin reclaiming more of this empowering Indigenous language spoken by generations of my Osage people who, whatever their mixed heritage of French, Occitan, Cherokee, and white people, were all beautifully and sovereignly Osage because they stayed, worked, lived, and loved with our people the way I am proud to do today. I am so happy to continue bringing this inspired-by-history story into the world, and I urge you to write and tell stories too. Thank you so much to Dr. Jessica Moore Harjo and Kevin King of Typotheque for helping me work to represent this title in orthography, and to my wonderful agent for advocating that the title be depicted in orthography. This book would not be possible without the hard work that the Osage Nation Language Department does to make our orthography accessible. I am also very appreciative of the understanding of Publishers Marketplace, who published this announcement using a title without Romanized characters—a first, I am told. 𐓍𐓘𐓧𐓣͘ 𐓷𐓘𐓻𐓪͘𐓟. I am supported by the encouragement and support of my editor and advocates at Words of the People, and because of this, I’m able to continue. 🤍

He’s gone. I took author photos because I wanted him to have a good portrait, I never thought they would be used in his obituary. I can’t believe he’s not coming back, he had been recovering, but then he just went quickly. There’s no explanation that can make it make sense. I’m grateful for the time we had with him this past month, and all the support that has been coming in. Here are some of the things we liked to do together: be with family, be outside, write songs, practice and learn traditions. He was so supportive. He was writing two books. He loved driving every road and had a plan to drive every road in Osage County. He loved Virginia too, and his church friends there as well as at Osage Baptist. He wanted me to try and talk Osage to him often at the end weeks, and I’m just so broken that he’s gone. Thank you for your prayers, they are needed, and make the difference.
Here is a little more about him, from his obit: “Brian’s playful sense of humor and calm presence … Spending time outside … He held many roles … Husband, Father, Friend, Brother, Author, Name-Giver, Artist, Teacher, Coach, leaving many grateful for his influence.” ♥️ by @lookingtotheeagle

My dad is in the ICU after quadruple bypass heart surgery last Thursday. He is a writer, a community organizer of decades, and on track to finish his MFA at the Institute of American Indian Arts. 𐓀𐓣͘𐓰𐓚𐓤𐓘 is his Osage name, meaning Playful Sun, and he is Brian Hicks in English. After being in a medically-induced coma for five days, his organs are waking up and in need of strength to recover. He’s dealing with a lot of complications. I just wanted to ask you to pray for strength for him, and for his organs to recover fully — and for his heart to heal. Before he went into surgery, he told me that he did not want this to be the end. 𐓏𐓟𐓷𐓣𐓩𐓘 🙏🏼 by @lookingtotheeagle

This book won the American Book Award! Congratulating the contributors and the editors, as this is really an ✨ *incredible* ✨ accomplishment. Nineteen writers, three editors, all Indigenous womxn, a massive, big-deal national award. My futuristic short story in the anthology is “The Oklahoma Ocean,” telling of a not-so-far-away time when generations of fracking have made the state’s natural aquifers so salinated that they have collapsed. The story takes place there 🌊. The Utah Review noted that these unprecedented changes in climate “set the wheel in motion for the tribes to take back control of the land.” The collection is well-reviewed elsewhere, too, from a starred Kirkus review and beyond!
𐓍𐓘𐓧𐓣͘𐓸𐓲𐓣 🤌🏼💗✨Awesome and amazing stuff❣️Thank you to Stacie @navajodarling for inviting me to contribute, and being an incredible editor. Check the slides for info on the other editors and where to buy the book! My recommendation is @birchbark_books 📚💻
