This painting was initially started as a portrait session. The head of the main sitter was in the middle of the composition, and the other figure was behind her, almost like a helper or a guiding spirit. As the painting progressed the guiding spirit’s body began increasing in opacity, no longer see through, and began to engulf the main sitters head. Eventually the main sitter became completely enveloped by the helper, and only her hand and forearm remain exposed at the bottom of the canvas. If you look closely you can still see the face of the sitter in the belly of the helper.

I am not sure if this is a positive or negative story, and I am not sure who is really helping who.

This was the first painting I made for my show Prima Materia. Some people see a cow dying, some see it giving birth, and some don’t see the girl at all initially and think she is part of the cow. Could I be cheesy and ask what you see? Birth, death.. or neither? I am genuinely curious.

Ponte Sant’Angelo, a sextet of the instruments of the Passion of Christ

A collaboration between Madeline Owen @looselyassembled and Noah Trapolino @penkeeper

Six paintings, each 3 by 6 inches (7.6 cm x 15.2 cm) , on 2 inch thick (5 cm) wood panel. Oil on panel. 2026, made in Rome during our residency with @romeartresidencies and @brianboothcraigsculptor this past May.

We were struck immediately by the intensity and emotional weight of the angels on the bridge. Both of us chose three to focus on for this series. This is the closest we could get to statues of angels in such grandeur, as most around the city were perched quite high up. We spent several visits on the bridge and argued quite fervently over who got which angels… we compromised on a few.

Collaboration is quite fun, and this is one of our first. Rome was quite life changing, and you can see we are experimenting with powders, additives, to get the paint to move and rest the way we want.

Honored to have this piece included in @mriya.gallery Manicured Monkey Group Show curated by @aidasoka.

The wolf/coyote/dog hybrid has been a character I have circled around for quite a while, but for the first time, this one a wanted name. I call him “Yellowfoot”.
