4th Egyptian. 40 years. 270km. 🇪🇬

For my 40th birthday I ran the Marathon des Sables — 270km across the Sahara in 7 days, carrying everything I needed on my back. I was the 4th Egyptian in 40 years to take it on, in its 40th edition. I trained in Canadian snow for a race in the sand… and somehow, it worked.

This page is funny, honest stories about impossible races and starting over abroad — Egypt to Kuwait to Canada. The MDS Diaries start tomorrow.

What would you do to mark turning 40?

When I was out there in the middle of the Sahara, pushing through 270 km of relentless heat, I kept asking myself: Why am I doing this?

The real answer didn't hit me until the finish line. I wasn't running for a medal or a photo. I was running to bring a world-class experience back home to Egypt (don't worry, it won't be 270KM!).

Our country deserves an international sports event on this scale. We have the landscape, the heart, and the youth to show the world what we’re truly capable of.

The race is over. Inspiring initial meetings and strategic discussions with sports officials and key stakeholders have already set the wheels in motion. Now, the real work begins to bring a global dream to Egyptian soil.

Thank you to everyone who believes in this vision. We’re just getting started!

Sometimes, you enter a challenge thinking you're just running through a desert... only to finish and realize you were actually chasing after your dreams.

When I decided to take on the Marathon des Sables in Morocco, it was never just about the 270 kilometers, the medal, or a finish line photo. The true goal was to return to home with a real, hard-earned experience—one that would allow me to advocate for a much bigger dream: curating a world-class sports event right here under Egypt’s name, bringing people from all over the globe to witness the true beauty and strength of our land.

Step one was the race itself.

Step two was the honor of meeting with Dr. Mohamed El-Kordy to discuss the vision, followed by a meeting with His Excellency the Minister of Youth and Sports, Gohar Nabil.

As for step three... God willing, that will be the day we see this dream become a reality on Egyptian soil. by @lordaymz

Before the running even started, Marathon des Sables gave me its first reality check. 💀

The official briefing — in French, very serious — explained the toilet system: a biodegradable bag, a little stool, and the Sahara. Then I tried it. My official review: I will be talking about this more in my stand-up comedy. No further comment.

And that was just the warm-up. One day, an "incident" occurred. 😳 That story is coming later in this series…

Runners — be honest: could you handle a week of the bag-and-stool system, or is that where you tap out?

Day 0. We hadn't run a single kilometre yet.

The road in: a dawn stop in the middle of nowhere — stretch our legs, and empty our tanks for whoever needed to go. Last call before the desert. Then the road gave out and we rolled into the bivouac — rows of black tents, Moroccan tea and sweets waiting as a welcome, and the flags of every country in the race. Of course I stopped at Egypt's. 🇪🇬

At the briefing they told us: "The world you know ends here." Then came Roosevelt — the man in the arena, covered in dirt and dust and sand, striving valiantly.

That evening, my friend Hasbaoui lit our first fire and put the water on. And the next day they called our names, we handed in our gear, and I sent my last transmission for seven days.

Tomorrow, the 270 kilometres begin. See you at the start line. 🏜️

Tell me: when does a big challenge stop being an idea and get real for you — the journey there, or the start line? 👇

'192' is the reason I made my first friend at MDS — before I even set foot in Morocco. 🇪🇬🇲🇦

We were assigned to the same tent, so @hasbaoui_mohammed and I started messaging — and clicked instantly. Two North Africans, one tent… and I still spent the whole week begging him: "speak slowly, in Arabic, I beg you," because I couldn't follow a full sentence.

He swears I'm the reason he wasn't top 100 — that I held him back on Day 1. I was running my fastest just to keep up with him for the first 20km. And somehow, between "where are my flip-flops?" and "where's my cap?", he became one of the best friends I came out of that desert with.

And because MDS throws you into a tent at random, ours also held three El Morabity brothers — who went on to finish first and second. The one in the cover photo? That's @elmorabity_mbark_osteopathe , he played a key role in what happened the following night.

Next in the Diaries: the night our tent collapsed.

Who's the friend a race or a trip gave you that you still have?

Everything I lived on for 7 days in the desert, on my back, for 270km.

No support crew handing me things. No hotel. If it wasn't in the pack at the start line in Morocco, it didn't exist — the food, the sleep kit, the foot care, all of it. You learn very quickly the difference between "nice to have" and "glad I carried that up every dune."

This was my whole world for a week. The race itself? That's the MDS Diaries, coming next.

Runners — what's the one item you'd never race without?

So many core memories created yesterday! 10hrs of driving to and from Cleveland with the son, niece and nephew, matching jerseys, our first time watching the @egyptnt play LIVE! And fittingly running into the CFO post game.

Managed to recapture the magic of when i was a kid and we'd go on roadtrips go the North Coast or Sharm. But we never drove 10hrs in one day back then!

And the impromptu @liverpoolfc reunion? Magic!

@hasbaoui_mohammed would always make fun of how i introduced myself to people along the run, I'm Egyptian, raised in Kuwait now living in Canada. He'll say I'm the reason he wasn't top 100 coz on day 1 i held him back, even though i was running my fastest to keep up for the first 20KM 🫠

MDS is billed as the toughest footrace on earth, but what they dont tell you is you'll make friends there that last a lifetime. From scouraging for firewood to sharing meals together, to waking each other up and psyching ourselves up for the distance of the day, you were the first LIFETIME friend i made at MDS.

I call this giving credit where credit is due, and there's a lot of credit to give so stay tuned. by @lordaymz

Celebrating turning 40 by running 270KM earlier this month? Legendary. by @lordaymz

In the beginning, i asked to be placed in a tent with arabic speakers. Never did i imagine I'd end up sharing a tent with the defending champions @mohamedelmorabity @elmorabity_mbark_osteopathe @elmorabityrachid

On the 2nd night, our tent collapsed ontop of our heads. You'd think our Canadian neighbors would come to our aid, right? Maple wrong.
