Thoughtful design brings a 100-year-old kitchen into its next century.

This historic Los Angeles Tudor turned 100 this year. Lori Gilder Interior Makeovers gutted and replanned the kitchen entirely, improving layout, circulation, storage, and function while respecting the home's original character.

Lori Gilder shares, “One of my favorite things about this kitchen is the mix of warm wood, painted cabinetry, natural stone, aged brick, and exposed beams. Everything feels collected and appropriate to the architecture.”

"The Monsoon hood insert is completely concealed within the custom hood, providing powerful ventilation without competing with the design. The panel-ready dual-zone wine cooler blends beautifully into the cabinetry, with separate temperature zones for reds and whites."

This modestly scaled primary bath began in a place mast renovations do: dark, dingy, dated, and disconnected from the architecture of the home and the landscape beyond it.

We needed to rethink how the room lived, how light moved through it, and how the surrounding canyon became part of the experience.

We altered the floor plan and introduced a large picture window behind the freestanding tub, immediately changing the relationship between indoors and out.
From there, the mirrored niche and expansive vanity mirror were strategically placed to capture and reflect those canyon views throughout the room.
Now, nature appears at every turn.

The result is a primary bath filled with natural light, calm, and a quiet elegance that feels connected to its mid-century setting.

And the best part?

When the view becomes the art, the room doesn’t need much else.
This is where thoughtful design makes the difference. We bridge the gap between what a space is and what it has the potential to become.

For a home celebrating, it’s 100th birthday this year, we couldn’t think of a better gift than a Kitchen Design for the way it lives today. Our goal was to design a kitchen that feels as though it has always belonged. And one designed to carry this home into its next 100 years. taken in Los Angeles, California by @lorigilder

A successful renovation of any kind starts with a clear plan! For this kitchen, renovation the demolition plan shows exactly what will be removed, while the proposed floor plan lays out how the new kitchen will work. These drawings guide the entire construction team and keep the project aligned with the design vision from the start. Natural light changes everything!
From skylights and clerestory windows to picture windows, glass details, and reflective surfaces, each layer works together to pull light deeper into your home, and creates a stronger connection to the outdoors.
The result is a brighter, more open environment that supports how you live, work, and feel every day.

Top 5 ways to bring in more natural light:

A new and exiting project taking shape. We take our 2D plans & elevations and turn them into 3D renderings so clients can clearly see where the design is headed. It helps to understand the full potential of the space early on, before we refine and make any changes. #Behindthedesign #moderninteriors #designprocess #architecturaldesign
