Thoughtful design brings a 100-year-old kitchen into its next century. This historic Los Angeles Tudor turned 100 this year. Lori Gilder Interior Makeovers gutted and replanned the kitchen entirely, improving layout, circulation, storage, and function while respecting the home's original character. Lori Gilder shares, “One of my favorite things about this kitchen is the mix of warm wood, painted cabinetry, natural stone, aged brick, and exposed beams. Everything feels collected and appropriate to the architecture.” "The Monsoon hood insert is completely concealed within the custom hood, providing powerful ventilation without competing with the design. I’ve been to a lot of product launches. This one was different. Maybe it’s because it happened in Italy where proportion and materiality aren’t trends, they’re a way of life. Where every doorway, every stone floor, every carved detail carries the weight of centuries of getting it right. There’s no more honest place to introduce something built on exactly those principles. At a private reception in the Armani Suite in Milan, @kallistadesign unveiled the Voussoir collection. Sinks carved from a single block of stone, shaped by mass, curve, and continuity. What struck me most was the juxtaposition: the Armani Hotel’s razor-edged modernism as the backdrop for a collection that feels quietly ancient, closer to Italian antiquity than anything I expected to see at Design Week. Surely that tension wasn’t accidental. It was perfect. As an architect and you’ve spent 30 years thinking about proportion and material, you recognize when someone else has too. Richard T. Anuszkiewicz @richarda2z got it exactly right. Bravo. The evening ended with an intimate VIP dinner alongside Richard, Rebecca Reynolds & Lori Gilder of @kitchendesignnetwork , and Sarah Richardson @studiodearborn …and then a wonderful surprise. Seated at our table was Catherine Jones, a full-circle moment I didn’t see coming. As a Robern brand ambassador, finding her there at a Kallista evening, in Milan, at a table like that, felt like exactly the kind of serendipity this industry quietly delivers when you show up. I’ve known Richard for years. Watching this collection receive the room it deserved, in the city it deserved, was one of the most memorable moments of my trip. Last month, @eichholtzlosangeles hosted an intimate dinner celebrating the U.S. debut of heritage brand @littlegreenepaintcompany, now with its own dedicated space inside the new showroom. Thompson is there in M20 upstairs along with so many other incredible exhibs with fiber arts, sustainable lighting, art, planters, furniture, jewelry, etc.
