On Monday, UNESCO convened the global celebration of World Teachers’ Day in Paris alongside the ILO, UNICEF and Education International — a day of addresses, a teachers’ choir, and the awarding of the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development. This year’s theme is Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.

UNESCO frames the status of a teacher in three parts: symbolic, or whether the work is visibly valued; professional, meaning autonomy and a voice when policy is written; and material — salary, workload, conditions. A community can be generous with the first while falling short on the other two.

This Friday the Louisiana Exchange Call takes up all three. An hour of recognition, and a serious conversation about what the profession needs next.
