They say "Never meet your idols". I thought that only applied to the living!

Whilst I obviously didn't meet a dead man, I did stand right next to him 'in the grave'. However, the whimsical, romantic notion ive always carried of the famous Bard Robert Burns was somewhat destroyed when I discovered as oor Rupert McKenzie would put it - he was "in his cups more than out of them - a fornicator of women and a shagger of wee beasties when there's no women to be found...". He was a reet rum un old Rabbie by all accounts.

The Don Juan of Dumfries!

He even kept a room at his local pub for his extra marital affairs. He also was not living in any form of poverty as id always believed. Man had a diamond ring, which he used to sign his name on a window at home. His family didn't live in one room but in many, with at least 4 bedrooms, separate to the main living areas. He even converted the attic. He was definitely not short of paper, unlike the Brontes and others who had such scarce amounts of paper they wrote so small, that even with a magnifying glass, you couldn't decipher it. The size of Rabbie's writing makes it easy to read even centuries later but clearly proves paper wasnt a luxury to him.

Och well! He was human. A phenomenal poet and a sublime socialist.

As he said "A man's a man for a' that..." taken in Robert Burns' House Dumfries by @lorna79uk
