“Lorna Bauer configures a unique gleam of silver and chrome opacity with glass and light-sensitive silver nitrate, both crucial instruments for early black and white photography. Photographic vignettes of plant life are embedded in the false mirror, with ripples held fast like toxic bubbles in a pond reflective of the Montreal wasteland contaminating local ecology. Stained with silver, the lampwork glassware resembles the yellow fruit growing on the trees surrounding Villa E-1027, the Irish architect Eileen Gray’s modernist masterpiece. Instead of photographing the sight, Bauer recited it with a different layered contraption of fragility with a change of key.” Text by @hindley5vv

Last week to visit Maison en Bord de Mer at Trotter&Sholer in New York, a solo exhibition by Lorna Bauer

“Works like A House is Not a Machine are made reflective by application of silver nitrate, which is a light sensitive substance also used in black and white photography. The ensuing gleam is reminiscent of Eileen Gray’s chrome furniture, especially the chromed-framed mirror featured in E-1027. The relief forms were generated by placing window glass on a plaster mold and firing it in a kiln, fixing the shapes of the mold onto the glass. This is essentially the principle of the photogram applied to glass. Some of the photographs are embedded in thes mirrored reliefs, blurring the distinction between the pictures and the actual surrounding reflected.” — Excerpt from the exhibition text by Yuki Higashino.

Maison en Bord de Mer is on view through August 8, 2026.

Deeply thrilled to present new work by Lorna Bauer and Alana Zack (@alanazack @lornabauer). Both artists attend closely to how landscape is sensed and held in the body. Bauer’s photographic liquid mirror and glass works follow the movement of light across surface, tracing how perception forms. Zack’s paintings and wood sculptures return to the shoreline as a site of memory and ongoing formation. The exhibition approaches nature as something continually mediated: drawing from Hal Foster’s writing in Compulsive Beauty, Virginia Woolf’s tidal consciousness in The Waves, and Bracha L. Ettinger’s understanding of matrixial transmission. by @lornabauer
