Sending all of my love to dear friends who had loved ones stolen and all my fellow New Yorkers today. These are photos I took that horrific day. Those of us who lived through it will never be able to fully explain what we went through. The shock. The fear. The immense sorrow. The overwhelming desire, no….NEED to do something. My dear friend Laura and I left our agency, Wilhelmina Models, not knowing what to do with ourselves. Would there be more attacks? Were the subways next? No one in the city, and I mean no one wanted to go home. We all wanted to be with each other. We went as far down to what was left of the World Trade Center as we were allowed to go, worried about our models who were there for the shows. No one had phones then. We ended up at a bodega and bought peanut butter and jelly to make sandwiches for the rescue workers. Too horrified to eat, they were left untouched.

Hundreds of us amassed at St. Vincent’s hospital, including Marisa Tomei and Philip Seymour Hoffman…just any other New Yorker, desperate to give blood to help. Laura and I waited for hours for victims to arrive…surely there would be so many in need of blood. Scores of Doctors and Nurses in their uniforms standing outside with gurneys, ready to assist. Once the sun set, and a thousand of us gathered next to frantic family members putting up signs desperately trying to locate their loved ones, the horrific reality set in. Not one single victim came to St. Vincent’s to be treated. Not one. There were no survivors to treat.

Over the next several days thousands of us gathered on the West Side Highway to cheer on the rescue workers that came from all over the world to try to locate survivors. We took shifts at restaurants in lower Manhattan to serve meals from places that stayed open 24/7, giving free food to all who were helping. The unifying feeling and resilience of all New Yorkers during that time will forever stay with me. I will never ever forget. ❤️

We at RYSIT give so much gratitude to Dr. Jane Goodall. She showed us that wonder can change the world. She proved that science and compassion belong together and, through her understanding of empathy, from her groundbreaking work with primates to inspiring generations of budding activists, we learned that we can all stand up for our environment with grace.

We will carry her work forward in the everyday things we do: from planting, protecting, and sharing, to embodying the belief that small acts, multiplied, can change everything.

Dr. Goodall reminded us that to save our planet is not just an act of science, but an act of love. Her legacy is not only in the forests she protected or the lives she inspired, but in the enduring call she leaves behind: to live with purpose, humility, and hope. May we honor her by becoming better stewards of this Earth, together.
