Rosé is the least explored genre of wine.

I reckon this is where most of my passion for pink wines originates.

Rosé has such a rich and lengthy history. Yet today, we view it as a simple pool-side refreshment at best, or a university-time headache creator at worst.

But a rosé with intention is different.

When the vineyard is farmed for rosé; when the grapes are harvested for rosé; and when the wine is produced specifically for rosé; a wine that ticks all the boxes is possible.

Complexity, texture, aromatics, depth, all on top of a beautiful pink hue.

A rosé made with intention can bring together some of the most elegant and sought-after aspects of both red and white wines into an entirely different expression.

There are some incredible rosés in the world, but I’d say the space is still very much uncharted. And I am committed to and loving the exploration 🥂

I wanted to keep my Blanc de Blanc project secret… but the way this 18-month endeavour came to the brink of failure before being saved at the last minute, is worth sharing.

There were many things that made me decide to call SA home, but the wine community is at the top of that list.

I’ve developed a massive passion for Cap Classique over the last 9 years. My Brut Rosé MCC has also quickly become my most popular wine.

So I’ve had this idea of doing a proper Blanc de Blanc for a while - but I don’t have any Chardonnay.

I’ve visited every Chardonnay vineyard along our coast over the last 2 years in hopes of buying; but to no success.

While venting about this failure to a friend in the winery 2 weeks ago, the winemaker/owner of Ataraxia walks in. A gent I’ve looked up to for many years and is one of the best winemakers I’ve ever met…

He asks “what’s your schedule tomorrow?”

I list a whole lot of things.

He tells me to be at his farm first thing in the morning.

Anyone who knows SA wine will tell you, if the winemaker of Ataraxia tells you to meet him at his farm, you cancel your plans and go.

The next day I arrive, and he writes off his entire day to drive me through every vineyard of Chardonnay on his farm. We tasted the grapes from each block together. We discussed the soils, slopes, clones, etc etc.

And at the end of it, he asked if I’d like to make my first Blanc de Blanc from anything he showed me that day.

This gnarly-sloped, quartz-filled vineyard was what immediately stood out.

And so I am so excited to share that my first ever Blanc de Blanc is now in the winery from a beautiful block I was privileged enough to hand-select with a legend of SA wine from one of the most special and beautiful sites in the country.

This is why I call SA home and I’m so grateful everyday to be here 🙏

Two of my favourite people I’ve ever met are from Sweden, though they’ve called Camps Bay home for well over 20 years.

They invited me to host a tasting at their place for a group of wildly talented Swedish restaurateurs.

When I arrived, I noticed a bathtub on the balcony, overlooking the sea.

Sure, it’s a stunning view to bathe with. And I certainly don’t understand Swedish culture. So I thought 👍👍👍 and kept my questions to myself.

Then I walked over for a closer look. It was full of ice and beverages.

My friends caught me trying to figure it out. Turns out, when they renovated the house back in the early 2000s, they couldn’t bring themselves to get rid of the beautiful Victorian tub from the old bathroom. They also recognised the very real need for cold drinks in this part of the world.

And just like that, one of my favourite design features I’ve ever found in a home was created 🥂

“Is this profitable?”

“Can you scale?”

“Why aren’t you in bottle shops?”

Guys, I’m doin’ well 🙏

I don’t reckon I’ll buy a boat anytime soon. But I wake up each day and get to put my full effort into making the best wines possible.

There’s no sales department, marketing people, or directors here taking away from that single effort.

We’re just growing grapes and making wine 🥂

It’s the only focus and I think you’ll taste it in the wines.

This simple life has me both on my bike and in the vineyards every day of the week.

I’m doin’ well 🥂

This year I’ve been lucky enough to pour my wines alongside some incredible talent: top chefs from across SA, and even a few Michelin-starred chefs from around the world. I still can’t believe what a year it has been. 🙏

But if I’m honest, my favourite events, the ones that actually built LOST BOY, happen in people’s homes.

My wines and my story come without pretence, and that’s exactly how I like to share them. All you need is a group of wine-loving friends. Snacks optional.

Just a few days ago, I had one of the most unbelievable home tastings of my life, in an apartment in Ballito, with a host we all need to convince to open a restaurant.

She planned, cooked and plated over 20 different small dishes. Every single one a masterpiece.

My only regret? Not getting more photos. I was way too busy enjoying.

What an evening. I’m blown away constantly by the incredible people my wines have introduced me to in this world.

We’ve been fostering this little rescue Greyhound for a few months now. The poor guy has a lot of trauma and quite a rough past.

But I’ll go ahead and soft launch him into our life now… because I don’t think this oke is going anywhere.

I reckon we’re keeping him.

My wife was walking him yesterday and a friend drove by. He phoned me and said ‘for the first time, he understands when people say dogs look like their owners’.

He thought he was making fun of me, as the thin American cyclist.

But I love it.

This guy IS speed. And he’s a lot more 🥂

Excited to introduce y’all to the new winery dog - Dobby.

He’s a very kind boy.

Don’t challenge him to a race, though. taken in Gansbaai, Western Cape by @lostboytrev

The biggest job of the winter is done: Pruning 🙏

Shaping the vines. Defining the crop. Framing a vintage.

Hundreds of thousands of snips over 3 weeks — timing and precision is everything.

It’s still cold and wet here. But every farmer I talk to says the same thing: the coming season isn’t shaping up like years past. Good or bad, nobody knows yet.

I’m optimistic. And our effort here reflects that optimism.

Let’s see.

The foundation is set. Cheers to the 2027 crop 🥂

Make hay while the sun shines 🍷

With the farm quiet and the mornings chilly, a little wintertime barrel work fits perfectly and is best paired with a sunrise.

As of right now, Malbec and Syrah are the two biggest standouts from the 26 vintage.

Things are young. But set a date in your calendar for 4 years from now to come taste and see how my predictions went 🙏

The biggest effort of the winter and the first step for the next vintage is finished 🙏

Pruning: ✅

It may seem like we’re simply snipping old shoots off of a dormant vine, but there’s a lot of art that goes into this process.

We are quite literally shaping how the next vintage will hang while also planning for its size and vigour.

More than anything, pruning symbolises the starting line for 2027.

I am very grateful for another chance to make some great wines. Let’s see how we do 🥂 taken in Gansbaai, Western Cape by @lostboytrev
