Having just celebrated his 80th birthday with a star studded concert at Town Hall in Manhattan, Loudon will bring his classic song catalog to Arden for the first time on January 8! Born in Chapel Hill, N.C. in 1946, Loudon Wainwright III came to fame when “Dead Skunk” became a Top 20 hit in 1972. He had studied acting at Carnegie-Mellon University but dropped out to partake in the Summer of Love in San Francisco and wrote his first song in 1968 (“Edgar,” about a lobsterman in Rhode Island). Loudon was signed to Atlantic Records by Nesuhi Ertegun, and after that was lured by Clive Davis to Columbia Records, which released “Dead Skunk.” His songs have since been recorded by the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, his son Rufus Wainwright, and Mose Allison among others. The Wainwright-McGarrigle holiday saga is returning to New York City’s Town Hall on December 6 for “Manhattan for the Holidays,” continuing a beloved family tradition benefitting The Kate McGarrigle Fund and Folk Cancer: The Kate McGarrigle Project.

Joined by special guests Cyndi Lauper, Alice Phoebe Lou, Jenni Muldaur, Justin Vivian Bond, Mario Cantone, Loudon Wainwright III, Lucy Wainwright Roche, and more. All in honor of our mother, Kate McGarrigle, and to help raise money in the fight against cancer.

It was @loudo3’s big birthday tribute on Saturday at
@townhallnyc. I was too busy chatting and remembering words to take photos. But boy I had a good time. Pictures here variously depict: the encore as I threw a harmonica about, me and @juddapatow (a picture specifically taken for @typingtest), the top of @oldmansco’s beautiful Ibanez, the poster yet to be signed (I snagged one), the set list, a Spinal Tap reunion, the encore again, Rufus’ shoes. I remember that before my song I said: “great to be at Loudon’s memorial…. I didn’t know he was dead.” “I’M NOT DEAD!” He shouted from the wings. It was a great night. If you’d told 18 year old me, busking in Hastings (my songlist mostly Loudon songs and I’ll find an old cassette to prove it!), that I’d play this show, I would have been the happiest teenager in the world.

A beautiful evening celebrating the life, music and lyrics of the great #LoudonWainwrightIII @loudo3 took place at Town Hall @townhallnyc on the occasion of his 80th Birthday.

His whole extended family, all his talented kids (even the one who’s not a professional singer), his friends and collaborators came out from all over the world to perform the music of Loudon.
