We wrote 1000 friendly reminder postcards to Texans and New Yorkers, heard some great East End talent, consumed a few local brews and, as advertised, Rocked the Vote. Thanks to all who showed up and to the @masonicmusicseries for once again so generously offering to the community our favorite living room of a space, and of course to @x_i_n_e for organizing us and bringing all the “light” and energy always. @jakelear @jamesonellis @loudo3 @fistys and @emtakesthemic you always bring it 🙌

Loudon Wainwright III has been part of my record collecting journey almost from the beginning..which is kinda funny because I didn’t even discover the guy through music.

I first knew him as the goofy dad on Judd Apatow’s Undeclared in the early 2000s..so finding out THAT guy was actually this respected singer-songwriter blew my mind. Then I started hearing the music..and holy HELL did I get it.

Loudon writes songs like somebody left his internal monologue running. 😂 He’ll admit to jealousy, vanity, aging, family dysfunction and his own worst personality traits..then make you laugh before hitting you with something heartbreaking.

There’s a fearlessness to how unflattering he’ll make himself that I’ve ALWAYS found fascinating.

I’ve been collecting his records ever since..and Fame and Wealth was the FINAL album I needed to complete that early run. Mannn..once you’re down to one or two records..collecting turns into a scavenger hunt..and finding that last one is SO damn satisfying.

Released in 1983..Fame and Wealth was Loudon’s first studio album in five years and his first for smaller label Rounder after years in the major-label world. The smaller setting fit him beautifully tho..putting the songs right up front.

As for standout tracks..The Grammy Song is PEAK Loudon..turning his desire for recognition into something funny, bitter and pathetic. Five Years Old digs into fatherhood with his uncomfortable honesty he does so well..while Westchester County takes aim at his own privileged upbringing. Richard Thompson even pops up on guitar for April Fool’s Day Morn.

The album wasn’t a huge commercial breakthrough..but it started another great stretch that led into his follow-ups I’m Alright and More Love Songs.

And mannn..what a perfect record to FINALLY finish this hunt with. I started with some goofy actor on Undeclared and somehow ended up chasing down his entire early catalog years later.

THIS is the kind of weird journey that makes collecting so damn fun.

All tracks recorded on this volume are field recordings, made in non-traditional locations using an authentic 1930s Presto direct-to-disc recorder operating at 78 RPM, single microphone, ruby cutting stylus and a blank lacquer disk.

Result is stunning and (kid you not) leaves me in a sea of tears...

Having just celebrated his 80th birthday with a star studded concert at Town Hall in Manhattan, Loudon will bring his classic song catalog to Arden for the first time on January 8! Born in Chapel Hill, N.C. in 1946, Loudon Wainwright III came to fame when “Dead Skunk” became a Top 20 hit in 1972. He had studied acting at Carnegie-Mellon University but dropped out to partake in the Summer of Love in San Francisco and wrote his first song in 1968 (“Edgar,” about a lobsterman in Rhode Island). Loudon was signed to Atlantic Records by Nesuhi Ertegun, and after that was lured by Clive Davis to Columbia Records, which released “Dead Skunk.” His songs have since been recorded by the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, his son Rufus Wainwright, and Mose Allison among others.
