David Chichkan (1986–2025) was a Ukrainian artist, anarchist, and soldier. Known for his bold watercolors, murals, and posters mixing Ukrainian folk motifs with radical symbols. He was active in anarchist movements and in 2024 enlisted in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, calling Russia’s invasion “modern fascism.” On August 9, 2025, he was mortally wounded in Zaporizhzhia and died the next day at 39.

For the public ceremony held today in the center of Kyiv, the crowd was large, made up of his family, his brothers- and sisters-in-arms, and his friends. Black flags, black and red flags, rainbow flag and Ukrainian flags were held in the wind by young people mainly dressed in black. His political commitment was recalled, along with the importance of his utopian vision of the world — as well as his courage in battle. Famous partisans songs were played, like Bela Ciao and La Makhnovchina.

Some days ago, I spent some time taking photos in the metro with @amira_barkh and @nick.grinenko to report about how Kyiv residents were taking shelter after information has spread about a potential Russia mass bombing (which tragically happened).

Even underground, Ukrainians keep their dignity and adapt to the harsh reality Russia imposes to them. Thanks for their testimonies, recorded by my colleagues Amira and Mykola.

Yesterday, at noon, explosions had already been rending the sky over Kyiv for an hour—a sadly familiar occurrence since Russia launched a campaign of terror against the Ukrainian capital’s civilian infrastructure a few weeks ago.

A new front has emerged: that of a constant aerial battle between jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles on one side, and fighter jets, heavy machine guns firing tracer rounds, anti-ballistic systems, and small interceptor drones protecting a city of several million inhabitants on the other. Beneath these clashes, the residents of the Ukrainian capital go about their lives—the infernal routine of a country where the entire population is bound to the war effort and its morbid daily reality.

What took place at night before the summer is now a daylight reality. Where we used to assess the damage at first light, we can now experience it right beside us. To the senses that previously dominated—hearing and smell—sight has now been added: we see the smoke, we see the flames, we see the buildings collapse, we see the wounded and the dead.

Yesterday, shortly before 1:00 p.m., a Geran-5 drone exploded on a building belonging to the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. One woman was killed, and dozens of others were injured. The images of people standing at the windows of the burning building shocked the entire country.

Starting today, September 15th, Kyiv is beginning to gradually introduce an « All Red » traffic light mode at 9:00 AM every day for the national minute of silence.

During this minute, traffic lights will pause cars, cyclists, and pedestrians, while public surface transport will also come to a stop so the entire city can honor those killed as a result of Russian aggression.

Just minutes before this minute of silence today, Russian Shahed drones targeted the center of Kyiv, hitting at least two gas stations.

A few months ago, I had the opportunity, for @united24.media, to spend two days at the Catholic center hosting the « Veteran’s Family » program, an initiative dedicated to reconnecting families torn apart by war. It is one of the few programs in Ukraine offering this kind of retreat—10 families for 10 days, twice a month. It feels small, considering the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers. But it’s needed and
I believe this program works (even if the Catholic aspect, which is fairly subtle, isn’t really my thing). It gives practical tools for behavior and communication to men, women, and children whom the war has deeply strained, if not entirely driven apart.
A little over a month ago on a train, a soldier was telling me about the ordeal he experienced in a psychiatric hospital, where he had just spent two weeks trying to manage his severe anxiety. I told him about the Caritas-SPES Ukraine program. He immediately called his wife, and I saw a spark of hope return to his eyes.
I am writing this post in Ukrainian so that those who need it most can access it.

Austrian performance artist Florentina Holzinger @floholzinger recently visited Kyiv at the invitation of Kristina Kiselovaitė @kkisielovaite and the Kï Platform @ki.platforma. Connecting with local Ukrainian dancers, actors, and performers, Holzinger hosted a performance art workshop, during which people could spend a moment out of this world.

I had the chance to spend some time with her and her team.

A new generation takes the street in Ukraine. For over a month following the sudden dismissal of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, thousands of people have gathered almost daily across Ukrainian cities. In Kyiv, protesters assemble near the Presidential Office Building, calling on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to hear their demands.

Many of the cardboard protest signs are made from Nova Post boxes—a prominent symbol of Ukraine’s post-2014 entrepreneurial drive—and ask for Fedorov’s return as Defense Minister. Most of the demonstrators are young. Many were obviously too young to participate in the 2014 Revolution of Dignity and have never voted in a presidential election, as the last one took place in 2019. This generation’s formative years have been defined by the war in Eastern Ukraine, COVID-19 and Russia’s full-scale invasion, which led to the temporary suspension of electoral processes. But Ukrainians, as we see it, try to invent democratic tools and preserve their independency.

Fedorov, initially appointed as Digital Transformation Minister before briefly taking over the Defense Ministry in January 2026, earned widespread support for driving digital reforms and modernizing the defense tech sector. These initiatives supported critical strategic shifts in the war, including disrupting Russian industrial infrastructure over 2,000 kilometers behind enemy lines, banning the use of Starlink in Russia and occupied territories, and securing international recognition for Ukraine’s military innovation.

For many young Ukrainians, Fedorov represents the push for fresh leadership and democratic representation in a country navigating prolonged war and martial law restrictions.

But few days ago, Fedorov released a video calling for new elections and positioning himself as a potential candidate. The move sparked skepticism, particularly among frontline service members, who questioned the feasibility of a presidential campaign while active combat, Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure, « human safaris », and repressive occupation of Ukrainian territories persist.
