Krypton doesn’t glow evenly.

At certain voltages and pressures, the plasma forms striations, small bands of intensified ionization that appear as moving beads inside the tube. What looks like a continuous line is actually oscillating and uneven.

I’m drawn to krypton for this reason. It makes the structure inside the light visible.

“A Vivid Blur” highlights the fluid and variable nature of visual experience, positioning contemporary artistic experimentation within a centuries-long dialogue between scientific discovery and aesthetic inquiry.

Featuring a dozen artists, the exhibition includes neon, holography, plasma, projection, and analog photography, as well as intriguing installations that showcase the relationships between light, object, and environment. 🏮

On view at the SVA Chelsea Gallery through October 30. Open Monday–Friday, 10am–6pm.

Learn more about the exhibition—and two free public events—at sva.edu/events/a-vivid-blur.

I’m showing A Creek Not There in A VIVID BLUR at SVA Galleries in Chelsea this Thursday, Sept 10, 6–8 PM.

It’s an interactive light installation which explores how light can construct the presence of water without any water physically being there. The work recreates the optical conditions that make a creek visible — using real-time graphics, and body tracking.

The exhibition includes many incredibly beautiful artworks by local and international artists each exploring aspects of light. Come to the Reception to meet (some) of the artists.

A VIVID BLUR opens today at @sva_galleries in Chelsea.

My work A Creek Not There explores how light can create environments that feel physically present, even when no material object exists. The work reconstructs the optical system that would make the water of a creek visible, emphasizing caustics, shadows, reflections, and refractions — the effects produced as light bends through a transparent medium.

Come to the vernissage:

I wanted to create the optical system that we perceive as water - shadows, reflections, refractions, caustics - with a felt absence of the water itself. Almost like a mirage.

The calibration is done via a TPS algorithm, which smoothly warps one coordinate space to another using a set of matched calibration points. For up to 8 people with each 2 points (2 feet).

Developed for both LiDAR (blob tracking) and Kinect (skeletal tracking) and with a data recording system to make it easier to adjust the behavior of the ripples during setup.
The videos show moments during calibration of the tracking to decide on blob sizing, tracking smoothing, amount of ripples and placement of the boulders.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at InfoComm. It was a pleasure discussing how attention shapes the way we design spaces — and how light, media, sound, and architecture can quietly — or loudly! — borrow techniques from performance to guide perception, without ever telling people where to look.

1) Me setting the stage by introducing the principles that shape my design process — from the human cognitive cycle and attention triggers to spatial perception, audio, and the ways we can lower barriers to interaction through computational media and real-time stage technologies.
2) Andrew Lazarow exploring how narrative in theatre is built by revealing what matters, when it matters — and how we applied that principle in the design of COTE Las Vegas, creating a dramaturgical lighting environment that evolves throughout the day, from quiet dinner service to a fully audio-reactive nightlife experience.
3) Andrew Lazarow pulling me into a live magic trick to demonstrate just how remarkably narrow our field of attention really is.
4) David Tracy discussing his impeccable approach to public placemaking, attention, and the design process behind our work on Tree of Generations at the MCAAD Museum in Washington, DC.
5) Wrapping up the session together alongside prototypes from Tree of Generations, reflecting on how research, prototyping, previsualization, and collaboration shape the spaces we create.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, asked thoughtful questions, and continued the conversation afterwards.

A special thank you to @lauradfrank and @framework_org for inviting us to share this conversation on the Spotlight Stage at #InfoComm.

And thank you to the LAB at Rockwell Group for allowing us to share case studies from our work together. by @louiselessel

I'll be speaking at InfoComm next week!

We'll explore how lighting, media, and sound can shape attention across hospitality, museum, and performance environments through recent projects from the LAB at Rockwell Group.

Hope to see you in Las Vegas.

Sandbox Percussion’s ‘Canto Ostinato’ is a 75+ minute, evolving, audio-responsive @touchdesigner composition created by @candystations and @louiselessel. It is an homage to the visual music canon, honoring the revolving, open structure of Simeon ten Holt’s singular work through light, shadow, and instrumental architecture.

Canto Ostinato radiates warmth, spaciousness and luminosity. Built on chiming pulses and expansive harmonic shifts, the graphic score braids freedom within an undulating grid, inviting each performer’s interpretation within a shared framework and collective meditation.
The visual system unfolds in a cyclical arc, expanding and contracting over time through phases of density and minimalism, symmetry and unhinge through repetition, variation, and evolution over duration.

The graphic universe is drawn directly from the instruments themselves: the sol of the mallet, the sweep of the marimba, the beams of bars and resonant surfaces, transforming them into living graphic notation.
Performers’ shadows and audio-responsive light are integral to the composition, alternating and evolving alongside the sound.

Canto Ostinato premiered at Lincoln Center in June 2025 for @runningamoc and will tour in 2026.
We look forward to sharing it with the world.

NEBULAH x uberørt x NATURE
Første nedslag, september 2025, Basement Residency.

Nyt visuelt album udkommer i foråret 2026!

In April we created a deciduous temperate forest biome for @nebulahmusic for when they performed their new single Dew at the release event of @nature_theartist

Throughout the release of their forthcoming singles and albums, we will continue exploring, extending and modulating the environment, as we move from hyper realism towards complete surrealism.
