on this day, 31 years ago, @nodoubt released their third studio album titled Tragic Kingdom (1995) 🪾🍑💋🎸

It was the final album to feature original keyboardist Eric Stefani, who left the band in 1994. The album was produced by Matthew Wilder and recorded in 11 studios in the Greater Los Angeles area between March 1993 and October 1995. Between 1995 and 1998, the album spawned seven singles, including “Just a Girl”, which charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart, and “Don’t Speak”, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay and reached the top five of many international charts.

The commercial success of Tragic Kingdom prompted record labels to sign ska bands, and more independent labels released ska records and compilations. In early 2009, singer and songwriter The-Dream stated that he and Carey had already begun working on her next studio album: “I think it’s about just writing an album that includes the focus of all the hits that she’s had. She can’t take a loss; she has to do everything to the T. So it’s basically like we’re trying to make a greatest hits album without using the greatest hits”. In February 2009, The-Dream told to MySpace Music that he and Carey had finished seven songs for the album.

Carey revealed that she was calling the album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel because it was going to be “very personal and dedicated to the fans”. She says that she chose to use three images for the cover art because “there are a lot of different emotions and stories revealed on this album”. After participating in High School Musical, Hollywood Records made a proposal for Vanessa to start a solo music career. The album was produced in two months as the record company insisted that the album was to be recorded and produced quickly. “I did it my way. My single “Come Back to Me” is kind of pop and R&B, but the rest of the album brings a bit of pop rock, electronic music, and some ballads. It is a mixture of everything,” said Vanessa, who at first thought of making a purely dance album. Hudgens stated the title of the album stands for Vanessa, but also for variety, because the album is a mix of genres and styles.

“I’m a Slave 4 U” is an R&B song, written and produced by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of the Neptunes, who also collaborated with Britney Spears on “Boys”, another track from Britney. Both recordings were originally intended for Janet Jackson’s seventh studio album All for You (2001) – Jackson’s recording was an unreleased demo before the track was handed to Spears. Since its release, “I’m a Slave 4 U” has become one of Spears’ signature hits, as well as having been considered one of the defining songs of the early 2000s, the new millennium, and of the pop genre.

twenty two years ago today, @greenday released their seventh studio album titled 𝒜𝓂𝑒𝓇𝒾𝒸𝒶𝓃 𝐼𝒹𝒾𝑜𝓉 (2004) 💥

Recording sessions for American Idiot took place at Studio 880 in Oakland and Ocean Way Recording in Hollywood, both in California, between 2003 and 2004. A concept album, dubbed a “punk rock opera” by the band members, American Idiot follows the story of Jesus of Suburbia, a lower-middle-class American adolescent anti-hero. The album expresses the disillusionment and dissent of a generation that came of age in a period shaped by tumultuous events such as 9/11 and the Iraq War. Following the disappointing sales of their previous album Warning (2000), the band took a break and then began what they had planned to be their next album, Cigarettes and Valentines. However, recording was cut short when the master tapes were stolen; following this, the band made the decision to start their next album from scratch. The result was a more societally critical, politically charged record that returned to the band’s punk rock sound following the more folk and power pop-inspired Warning. Additionally, the band underwent an “image change”, wearing red-and-black uniforms onstage, to add more theatrical presence to performances and press events.

American Idiot was a critical and commercial success upon release. It was nominated for Album of the Year and won the award for Best Rock Album at the 2005 Grammy Awards. It was also nominated for Best Album at the Europe Music Awards and the Billboard Music Awards, winning the former. Its success inspired a Broadway musical, a documentary, and an unmade feature film adaptation.
