on this day, 11 years ago, @demilovato released her fifth studio album titled Confident (2015) 🖤

In February 2015, Lovato teased the album with a number of posts on Twitter, writing: “I’ve never been more confident in my sound. Never been so sure of who I am as an artist. Never felt this hungry and driven.” Lovato further described the album as “very authentic to who I am”. In June 2015, Lovato confirmed that she had been in the studio almost every day and would be releasing new music “very soon”. Lovato revealed to MTV News: “This time around, I was able to explore different sounds, and hone in on something that I’m really proud of.”

Confident debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, with first-week sales of 98,000 units (77,000 in pure album sales), behind Pentatonix’s self-titled album. It has since sold over 235,000 copies in the country, and was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In the United Kingdom, the album opened at number six on the UK Albums Chart, becoming Lovato’s highest-charting album there at the time.

on this day, 31 years ago, @nodoubt released their third studio album titled Tragic Kingdom (1995) 🪾🍑💋🎸

It was the final album to feature original keyboardist Eric Stefani, who left the band in 1994. The album was produced by Matthew Wilder and recorded in 11 studios in the Greater Los Angeles area between March 1993 and October 1995. Between 1995 and 1998, the album spawned seven singles, including “Just a Girl”, which charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart, and “Don’t Speak”, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay and reached the top five of many international charts.

The commercial success of Tragic Kingdom prompted record labels to sign ska bands, and more independent labels released ska records and compilations. Save Ferris’s guitarist and vocalist Brian Mashburn stated that No Doubt helped allow bands like his to receive attention from the mainstream.

on this day, 17 years ago, @mariahcarey released her twelfth studio album titled 𝑀𝑒𝓂𝑜𝒾𝓇𝓈 𝑜𝒻 𝒶𝓃 𝒾𝓂𝓅𝑒𝓇𝒻𝑒𝒸𝓉 𝒜𝓃𝑔𝑒𝓁 (2009) ࣪˖ ִֶཐི༏ཋྀ

In early 2009, singer and songwriter The-Dream stated that he and Carey had already begun working on her next studio album: “I think it’s about just writing an album that includes the focus of all the hits that she’s had. She can’t take a loss; she has to do everything to the T. So it’s basically like we’re trying to make a greatest hits album without using the greatest hits”. In February 2009, The-Dream told to MySpace Music that he and Carey had finished seven songs for the album.

Carey revealed that she was calling the album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel because it was going to be “very personal and dedicated to the fans”. She says that she chose to use three images for the cover art because “there are a lot of different emotions and stories revealed on this album”. Carey also stated that she loves “the whole album” and she’s “completely immersed in it”.

twenty years ago today, @vanessahudgens debut album, titled V, was released (2006) ✨

After participating in High School Musical, Hollywood Records made a proposal for Vanessa to start a solo music career. The album was produced in two months as the record company insisted that the album was to be recorded and produced quickly. “I did it my way. My single “Come Back to Me” is kind of pop and R&B, but the rest of the album brings a bit of pop rock, electronic music, and some ballads. It is a mixture of everything,” said Vanessa, who at first thought of making a purely dance album. Hudgens stated the title of the album stands for Vanessa, but also for variety, because the album is a mix of genres and styles.

Commercially, it debuted at number 24 on the US Billboard 200, was later certified gold in the US, and had sold about 570,000 copies by April 2008. The album was voted as the seventh best album of 2007 by the readers of Billboard.

25 years ago today, Britney blessed us with “I’m a Slave 4 U” (2001) 💕🐍👑

“I’m a Slave 4 U” is an R&B song, written and produced by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of the Neptunes, who also collaborated with Britney Spears on “Boys”, another track from Britney. Both recordings were originally intended for Janet Jackson’s seventh studio album All for You (2001) – Jackson’s recording was an unreleased demo before the track was handed to Spears. Since its release, “I’m a Slave 4 U” has become one of Spears’ signature hits, as well as having been considered one of the defining songs of the early 2000s, the new millennium, and of the pop genre.
The song achieved commercial success worldwide, peaking within the top ten in almost every country that it charted in. In the United States, the song peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 85 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart.
