As night starts to fall, Ville sings "Join Me in D eath." His beautiful voice carries through the crowd, deep and full of feeling, people are completely caught up in the moment and the atmosphere feels just right, like the night and the music were made for each other.

If I had a time machine, this is where I'd go! These times were gold!

We need to talk about “Don’t Fear The Reaper.”

As you know, this song is originally a masterpiece by Blue Öyster Cult, released in 1976 on their album Agents of Fortune. Written by guitarist Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser, the song was inspired by his own thoughts about mortality and the idea of death not necessarily as something terrifying, but as a natural part of existence.

Blue Öyster Cult artistically portrayed that idea of love, eternity and nature. It became a classic of rock music and Halloween season.

HIM later covered it on their debut album, Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666, released on November 20, 1997. HIM’s version feels like a gothic meditation on love transcending mortality.

My favorite lines are: “Seasons don't fear the Reaper / Nor do the wind, the sun, or the rain.” I find peace on those words. Nature does not resist its own cycles. Things arrive, disappear, transform and return.

The Romeo and Juliet reference of love becoming inseparable from tragedy:
She takes his hand.
She runs toward him.
They look back and say goodbye.

The Reaper isn't something we should love or seek, but something we inevitably encounter, the question is, can we face that inevitability without allowing fear to consume the beauty of being alive?

You asked for rare HIM Demos, so here it is, enjoy!

"Razorblade Kiss" was recorded in 1998. It was originally titled “Razorblade Romance”yes, like the album title. The song is over 5 minutes long, and I can’t stress enough how wonderful the melody and lyrics are. It deserves much more than a 1 minute video, it deserves to be analyzed verse by verse.

Origin: The demo comes from the early recording sessions "Slippery When Dead" era (a Bon Jovi-inspired joke title).

It was written during this same creative period of “Join Me in D3ath”. Some say the band recorded parts of this era naked in the studio.

Most fans love the demo more than the official version because it sounded less commercial, with a stronger gothic atmosphere and Ville Valo’s unfiltered writing before label influence.

“Razorblade Kiss" demo happened at the exact moment HIM transitioned from Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 darker era into the Razorblade Romance era. The birth of their signature sound: Love Metal.

Which version do you enjoy the most?... this demo or the official version?

Watch Ville stopping the gig to break up a fight in the crowd…

Let’s be honest, 90s Ville might have handled this with a little more sarcasm and a death stare. But years later, here he is, patiently playing peacemaker in the middle of a show.

I guess we all grow up a little… even the vampires.

Jokes aside, it’s a sweet reminder that concerts should be a place where we feel safe, connected, and free to enjoy the music together. Things can get heated in the moment, but a little patience and respect go a long way.

It’s 2x1 today.

“…but his eyes… it was as if when I looked into his eyes I was standing alone on the edge of the world… on a windswept ocean beach.”
— Anne Rice, Interview with the Vampire

I haven’t had much time to write lately. Between travels, days have been moving faster than I can hold onto them. But sometimes, amidst all the movement, you need to stop and return to the places that still feel like home.

So here I am, coming back to myself, to the music, the art, the words, the books, the darkness, the romance, and that quiet inner world that has always been there beneath everything else.

There are songs that belong to a particular moment, and then there are songs that seem to exist outside of time. "Join Me" is one of them. A song that has only grown more haunting, beautiful and meaningful with every passing year.

As autumn begins, let this one play like a memory carried by cold wind, familiar, melancholic and eternal.

Ville Valo about singing "Gone With The Sin" live:
“It’s a really really nice track, but it is pretty hard to get it going. It’s a simple production, but it’s hard to get it to sound right.”

In a 2005 interview in Amsterdam, Ville was asked how HIM chose songs for tours and festivals. He explained that they often avoided too many ballads because they wanted the live shows to be more rock-oriented. The studio recording is simple, but recreating that atmosphere with a full rock band isn't easy. Ville even joked that HIM were “lacking like two more guitar players”.

However, Ville himself has pointed it out as one if his favorites, when asked which HIM song he was most proud of, he talked about how songs become connected to particular periods of life and memories, and then specifically mentioned Gone With the Sin as “a nice song.” He reminisced about being young, recording the video in England, and walking through the old English graveyards.

In a later interview, Mige was asked about his all-time favorite HIM song, and he answered Gone With the Sin. He explained that its simplicity was precisely what made it special: a simple song that doesn't sound like a copy of thousands of others.
