Oh my sweet bestie Ri,
To be in the same timeline as you, is the most wonderful gift the world has given me. Our FaceTimes, our açaí bowl dates, Boulder adventures, and our time together at Naropa have been some of my most cherished moments. I thank God every day that you’re on this planet with me. He couldn’t have sent me a better angel to be my best friend forever. Thank you for being a constant light in my life and may we have many adventures together in the future.
Happy 26th birthday bestie! I love you and I miss you! How I wish I could be there to celebrate with you today. Know that I’m always there in spirit, rooting for you and holding your hand. 💕🎂✨ by @lovinglyriley

Yoga clothes aren’t real, and you can wear whatever you want to class

“Yoga pants” is capitalist appropriation and misrepresents the tradition. Strategic marketing has convinced millions that in order to practice yoga one has to wear tight, spandexy clothes that showcase the body.

Don’t get me wrong, these clothes can be useful for proprioceptive and visual feedback on alignment, but that isn’t the practice for everyone. For some, putting the body on display for the sake of yoga can be traumatic and counterproductive to the practice.

Clothes that display the body are not inherently yoga clothes. I like to think the clothes were designed with good intentions. However, following the commodification and over emphasis on postural yoga practice the clothes have become somewhat problematic.

Every outfit in this post is an outfit I have actually worn while practicing and teaching postural yoga.

Yoga in Sanskrit means to yoke or union, and the only thing yoga pants are unifying is my two buttcheeks into one

Happy weekend folks 😘✨ by @lovinglyriley

Balancing in yoga refers to cultivating Samatva (equilibrium) across physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions. In life, the body is constantly bringing itself back to balance, scientists call this process homeostasis. Therapists may call balancing the mind emotional regulation. Spiritual teachers may refer to achieving balance as harmony. Balance looks different in every body, mind, and spirit. The constant ebb and flow through equilibrium is a deeply personal process.

In a couple of weeks I will be offering a workshop about balanced alignment in yoga. We will move through and beyond the postures, exploring the process of balance on and off the mat.
