Did you know @jmebbkinsta used a Super Nintendo game console to make his first beats? 🎮

Games consoles, mobile phones, mp3 players and portable stereos - none of this technology was designed to make and release music, Black British artists turned games and consumer technology into production tools.

Now JME's games console lies in V&A East Museum, as part of The Music Is Black: A British Story, next to other iconic instruments like Joan Armatrading's childhood guitar.

It’s Jamaican Independence Day so it’s only right 🇯🇲

Jamaica has been at the helm of music innovation worldwide for decades and especially in the UK, they helped create some of our legacy genres and set the foundation for mainstream black British culture. With genre innovations like jungle and drum & bass they cemented a formula that was adopted in UK Garage, Grime and beyond. Shouts to @shyfx @clipzuk and @vybzkartel for continuing that legacy with Just Love. by @lowusounds

In one of my previous videos I came for the DJs. But often the DJs are not the problem, it’s the crowd.

Music evolves when producers or artists tested new music via DJs, and DJs tested them on a crowd. the crowd’s reaction told a producer if a track was working or not and that cycle repeated over decades is how most black British genres were built.

But this only works if people can move freely, and once your space is invaded by someone’s big bright phone light we stop moving freely. Stop reacting genuinely to the music and everything becomes a performance. And everybody a performer.

So what happens?

1. Producers lose the feedback loop needed to experiment and craft new sounds, and new music doesn’t get tested in the clubs

2. DJs are forced to perform for the cameras, they are more incentivised to play more recognisable music, which boosts their own profile through online/viral clips.

When this repeats long enough, music simply stops evolving. But what’s the solution?

And his Saturday myself and @eli1ah are going to be playing about 50 years of black British music, old and new. It’s music that’s meant to be danced too, so come and dance! by @lowusounds

MUSIC TASTEMAXXING

Here is some practical advice on how to get better music taste, for me, it starts with re-learning how to LISTEN to music. This is a technique commonly used by musicians and producers, I use it, try it and let me know if you hear things differently.

Music taste is everything, more than ever in this day and age of AI music, algorithmic non intentional music discovery. We’re force fed music and conditioned to like songs just off the sheer number of times we hear them by accident, out and about or while scrolling. This gets jarring so we result to going back and listening to what we know we already like, but this results in our music taste being stuck in nostalgia cycles, never forward thinking.

Get out of the nostalgia cycle and develop your music taste, start with listening intentionally.

Black British music is a rich story with different chapters representing different sounds. As a music producer, I’m fascinated with the production elements that move one genre into another: the drum patterns that shape each sound, basslines and tempos that are consistent themes across all the genres and the newer elements brought in to create new sounds.

I’m looking forward to playing all of it with the legend @eli1ah on the 11th of July at @thecarpetshop.peckham and taking everyone through those chapters 🟨🔊 by @lowusounds

Some thoughts on @jamesblake’s statement on the music industry ecosystem, whats fake and what you can do as a listener 🫵🏾

Essentially he’s right, and I love that he’s talking about it. But as an artist it just means that you should be doing everything you can to reach your audience direct and as a listener it’s time to use your ears and develop your own music taste, the numbers are none of your business

Can you tell I filmed this during the UK heatwave last week? 🥵 I WAS STRUGGLING by @lowusounds
