One of the most insightful panel talks I’ve attended with a lot of great perspectives and advice so I knew I had to ask a question to the experts and get their opinions on why we seem to get a a focus on certain things in music from the media on a mainstream level?

Got some really great answers and a lovely response to my question didn’t record that part as I wanted to be present and locked in to what they were saying but a lot of knowledge was exchanged and a lot gems were shared! 💎💫✨

A new question & a new provocation 🟨

I’m fascinated by the combination of context collapse and the rising expectations of what people have from DIY / independent arts and culture.

What ‘back in the day’ was great? And who was it great for and for how long and at what scale?

The past 15 years of storytelling, feature writing and media around club culture that was most widely distributed came from maybe less than 30 people, mostly based in London, NYC and Berlin and their visions of what the club / wider electronic music culture ‘IS’ or ‘SHOULD BE’ have permeated the entire worlds thinking around how spaces and communities are developed, organised and built.

Now there’s this limited, idealised version of what this can all be that I suspect most people have never regularly experienced, but they still take on as ‘THE’ only path.

An example of the context collapse, and time being warped: The period of time from July 2021, when lockdown restrictions lifted in the UK and today is longer than what most people would define as the ‘peaks’ of a lot of the pillars of what came out of late 90s/00s/10s London pirate radio culture like Jungle, UK Garage, Grime, UK Funky, Dubstep etc. All of that music has continued and will live forever in different ways, but the essential foundations of them were set and haven’t changed much outside of the 3-5 year window they developed in. I’ll be playing a lot of this, and wider Black British Music B2B with @LoWuSounds All Night @thecarpetshop.peckham

I’ve included extra clips from my podcast Deep Feedback where I’ve been exploring things like this in long form conversations with other artists, producers, writers and architects. New episodes will be with you soon!
