This frame was entirely handcrafted in the American Arts and Crafts period of the early 20th century by Walfred Thulin, however it is very reminiscent of Italian Florentine or Bolognese frames from the late 17th century. The Italian leaf frame was formed entirely from scrolling pierced acanthus leaves. Thulin was a well known master carver and gilder from Sweden; he particularly looked to Italian frames for his stylistic influence. In the late 17th century, elaborate Baroque northern Italian frames were used to frame portraits of important patrons or for ornamental mirrors. With its elaborate carving and ornamental crest, I would guess that Thulin made this frame for a mirror.

Thulin began making frames with Hermann Dudley Murphy and Charles Prendergast in 1903 and in 1911, their frame shop was incorporated as “The Thulin-Murphy Co.” with Thulin as President. The name was changed to “Carrig-Rohane” in 1914 and Thulin later left to form his own frame shop. Thulin's frames were almost always signed.

Bumpei Usui was a Japanese-American artist who became a frame and furniture maker in New York in the early 1920s. At this time in reaction to more ornate gilded frames; simpler, more rustic frames were often made by artists or in small frame shops for the artists and reflected the style of the new modern artworks. Rough carvings and silver leaf finishes were used to achieve a personal, less polished look. Bumpei Usui often made frames for his friend, the artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi.

This frame features a gadrooned outer carving and continuous front bead; it was made sometime during the 1920s-1940s and is signed on the verso. While the finish is modern, the design resembles an eighteenth century Sienese frame.

The American Impressionist painter, Childe Hassam was very involved in the framing of his pictures; he worked with a number of frame makers and began adding his initials to the outer molding of some of the cassetta designs in the early 20th century.

This is a beautiful example of his work: a piece from a series of paintings during World War I depicting flags on Fifth Avenue in New York. "Italian Day, May 1918"

It was framed by Lowy in a period early 20th century "Hassam" style gilt frame decorated with the artist's initial proudly representing the artist's name and legacy.

We are saddened by the recent death of Yayoi Kusama and her visions of polka dot infinity. Kusama became one of the world's most recognizable artists in her 80s and 90s after having been mostly overlooked for decades. Her exhibitions drew huge crowds around the world, and her artworks brought some of the highest ever prices for a female artist. She was 97 and continued to paint until her final days.

Today we are featuring a rare 17th century Italian hand carved and gilt walnut Sansovino style frame crested with winged cherub head fit with an antique style mirror.

The Sansovino frame is the first style of frame known to be identified with the name of an individual. The name is not really accurate because Sansovino, an Italian architect and sculptor who was Venice's finest Renaissance architect, almost certainly did not design the frame. The actual designer is unknown. Associated with Venice and the Veneto of the second half of the 16th century, Sansovino frames were also made throughout the 17th century.

Archival framing refers to materials and methods that promote the long-term health of an artwork on display by controlling environmental threats to its well-being,
such as humidity, temperature, light, dust, etc. All materials used in archival framing must be conservation grade and the techniques employed completely reversible,
leaving no trace when the artwork is removed from the framing package.

Watercolors, prints, drawings, photographs, rare documents, and collages are all examples of works on paper that need to be properly framed to ensure their longevity for generations to come.
