A.J. (After Japan): The calm after the calm as I incorporate acquired habits into my daily life.

Never-ending stretches of solace in an otherwise bustling city.

Perks of island living.

Birdsong-filled morning walks without my phone weighing me down.

Today, a light chat with a new neighbor. Our rescue dogs flirt and flit about in the grass. My teeth unbrushed, hair three days unwashed. A t-shirt tucked into the sweatpants I slept in describes me well: ā€œAll Panic No Disco.ā€ Sandwiched between the words, a raccoon dangling the mirrored orb from its paw.

I blush.

In my hands, a jam jar filled with an iced latte indicates my waking priorities: both the dog and my caffeine addiction, fed.

I might be unemployed but I have standards for the kinds of companies I want to work for. Manifesting a job that isn’t threatened by this sentiment. Even better if they agree 😘

We still have work to do. Holding politicians accountable, with grace, is important. They won’t be perfect—as none of us are—but to be effective we ALL need to turn our feedback into action.

What we don’t fight for can always be taken away. Still, there are more of us than there are of ā€themā€ so let’s get back to it. See you out there, NYC!

Some athletes swear by ā€œrunnin’ down a dreamā€ without music. And sure, there’s a time and place for that (trails, tracks, triathlons).

I prefer to drown out my inner monologue and lock in—especially when the task is 26.2 miles. It is marathon season, after all!

Whether you’re running or blasting tunes from the cheer section, here’s a dynamic mix to spark some inspiration. šŸ’„šŸŽ§

The full ~12-hour playlist is linked in my bio, but I’ve highlighted a few themes in the slides above.

Bonus: It also slaps for deep work, cleaning sprees, or spontaneous dance breaks.

Which ones do you love? What am I missing?

Dance is the one activity where time seems to stop. Immersed in the music, I cease self-consciousness—not that I cater to optics much anyway. A mix of dance training and humor, my movement is instinctual and unfiltered. I follow the rhythm, tossing out the rules. Before long, I’m twisting my hair into a messy bun and tugging at my shirt, attempting to fan the sweat running in rivulets down my sternum and spine.

Dance has always brought me clarity, much like how ideas tend to strike in the shower or on a long, aimless walk. For years, I’ve used it to regain composure after tense interactions or to work through complex problems. When I worked in an office, I’d slip into empty conference rooms after draining client calls and quite literally ā€œshake it offā€ (cue TSwift). Working remotely for the last half-decade has only increased the frequency of these dance breaks. I’m undoubtedly my healthiest self—creative, reflective, and bright-eyed—after even a few minutes of movement.

It’s fitting, then, that this photo of me gleefully dancing was recently snapped at a friend’s wedding. The moment was a perfect denouement to my several weeks of traveling, collecting stories, business ideas, contacts, new friendships, and another marathon medal.

Earlier this summer, I found myself soul-searching. Professional burnout, combined with the U.S.’s unsettling slide toward authoritarianism, made it hard to carry on with ā€œbusiness as usual,ā€ especially as someone who values authenticity and holds a strong sense of justice.

I reflected on the kinds of companies and communities I want to thrive in, and the companions I want to flourish with. I chose personal growth over productivity. I worked through a complicated relationship with marathon racing and with life’s rat race more broadly.

Frankly, I stared out at the boats motoring past my East River window, danced, and slept… a lot. I took time—a privilege I haven’t always been afforded in past economic downturns—and now, I return with clarity, perspective, and the right rhythm to carry me forward. by @lpasarin

Life isn’t linear. Even melancholy encounters rays of sunshine. One might simply need to reflect in order to see them. I’ve certainly been doing a lot of shoe-gazing!šŸ‘ŸšŸ˜

Turning 40 reinforced my boundaries. I’ve spent too long ā€œunderstandingā€ in spite of my own tears. A week later a felon puppeted by oligarchs took office as ā€œpresident.ā€ As a result I evolved from my ā€œf*ck itā€ era to my ā€œferalā€ era.

Life is nothing like what I imagined it would be six months ago. There’s this persistent feeling that I’m falling short in several life facets and an accompanying shame in the performative attempts to ā€œcatch up.ā€ There’s also a nagging reminder to be kind to myself. I’m happy to say the latter won. I feel life turning a corner again and there is as much excitement as there is fear in the unknown.

I’ll be running London Marathon in two weeks. It’s the first of three marathons this year. Training was a rollercoaster. In the end I came back to my ā€œwhyā€ and reminded myself ā€œthis is a privilege.ā€ Life itself, has always been a privilege. by @lpasarin

We may not speak every day, but I’m reminded of you whenever I peer at my lock screen. It’s this image’s details that no one would notice, like our coats (one was yours; the houndstooth was purchased on my behalf; both are mine now) and the scarf I procured in Amsterdam before visiting you in Erquy. You demonstrated how to wrap it, tips I’ve since paid forward. It’s even how this picture is taken (you instructed: three-second timer with the phone clenched between my teeth!).

I look at my life and see all the ways you’ve influenced it. At what point have these inspirations become my own ā€œparticularsā€?

Of course, there were similarities that built our kinship in the first place: an appreciation for British music, films, and literature; a tendency to dress in layers; a love for wolves; an obsession with the written word; a taste for whiskey; a penchant for cherishing handwritten correspondence and handmade gifts; and a desire for all things cozy. Over time, we agreed on Johnny Flynn’s vocals, East Village dive bars, Irish coffees, Breton winter beaches, and the importance of hats in our wardrobes.

Certainly, we have our differences. We are individuals, after all. I may not have the same admiration for period dramas and Jane Austen novels as you, but [it turns out] at the height of a pandemic, I would buy Emma streaming on Prime so we could watch the film together, albeit 3,400 miles apart.

I like this photo of us because I’m comforted by the memory of our hands wrapped around hot beverages. Much can be solved with a cuppa*. Perhaps that’s why I am fond of structuring difficult conversations and rapport building around coffee or tea.

That day was deceptively sunny as we wandered UES and Central Park. We stopped at a cafe located in a 19th-century church on 5th Ave to take a moment’s reflection and a break from the December wind. Your days in NYC were numbered, and we often struggle with the balance of ā€œdoing,ā€ ā€œarchiving,ā€ and ā€œbeingā€ on trips. Leaning into the latter, we observed passersby and warmed ourselves with sips from our paper cups. It’s often the quiet moments I treasure most. -L

Recently I was asked if I felt lucky having Kensi. The conversation was about dog temperament, but I feel lucky to have her in my life for more than her positive disposition.

When I adopted Kensi Oct 2021 I told @koreanK9rescue that I had ā€œa lot of love to give,ā€ an understatement if I’m honest. I had previously held off on adopting because I was overthinking the situation into paralysis. That disappeared when Kensi locked eyes with me through the bars of her crate in the adoption van outside Petco Union Square.

When she came home with me that night I felt the opposite of prepared, but thankfully KK9 believes in ā€œthree for threeā€ training. To help the dog decompress and open up in her own time, I didn’t pay Kensi attention aside from walks and meal times those first three days. This was perfect for rearranging my apartment. By the end of day two, Kensi hesitantly asked for belly rubs by laying her head next to my feet. I sat on my living room floor cross-legged while Phoebe Bridgers’ ā€œScott Streetā€ played (3:02—5:00). Kensi gradually unfurled her body. That moment is seared into my memory.

Generally aloof, this year Kensi has become more affectionate with me and people she senses are of my inner circle. While she’ll likely never be a lap dog, I’ve watched her evolve to sprinting toward friends and soaking up affection from those who’ve come to our apartment. Her sweetness even led to her becoming my office Slack emoji and a ā€œgood luck charmā€ for my run club.

I’m aware that ā€œluckā€ has little to do with Kensi’s development. When her breathing pattern changes to signal deep sleep or she pushes her nose into a friend’s palm for pets, I know those are products of the training we’ve worked through and the consistency we’ve built into our days. She’s safe. As her confidence grows new challenges have appeared, but I’m lucky to have Kensi and the routine she brings to my life. Among other things, I advocate better for my time and I’m much more discerning with whom we (I?) spend that time. She’s tough competition after all!

My little girl turned four yesterday and I’m very much looking forward to how she progresses this coming year. Happy Birthday, @kensinyc! taken in Roosevelt Island by @lpasarin

ā€œForward is a paceā€ has become more than a running mantra I used when ā€œtrainingā€ for the 2023 Chicago Marathon. I had gutsily shortened the 20-week timeline to roughly six weeks. Determined not to lose my @wmmajors star to knee injury deferment, I decided to run/walk the course. Confident I had enough mental toughness [and pain tolerance] to push through, I still minimized announcing my plans in case things spectacularly blew up.

The thing about forward movement is that it’s rarely linear. ā€œOne step forward, six steps back, two plunges forward, three circles to the leftā€ seems to be my life path. But as much uneven ground as I’ve covered the last few years—injuries and health scares, failed relationships, jobs lost—I know my blessings far outweigh the rubble. Lately, I’ve thought about how no one really gets it all. While I’m no exception, I do have a strong support system. I’d be remiss if I failed to credit them alongside my resiliency for the forward movement.

They have wiped my tears after a broken heart, showed up at my door with coffee when I crammed for a life-changing presentation, dropped plans to move me out of a physically unsafe apartment, helped untangle my life from a toxic ex, and project-managed my birthday celebrations because I have mixed feelings on the topic. Some are long-term confidants, others dived in as acquaintances. All have grown closer via shared transparency, and without a doubt, I’d show up to do the same. My loyalty is fierce once I’ve chosen my people, though it often feels less like a ā€œchoiceā€ and more like a natural next step when kindred spirits collide. The trick is recognizing them and then mutually committing to showing up.

Thankfully, the worst part about Chicago 2023 was my stomach’s lack of training. Forcing it to process that many salt tabs and energy gels led to a two-hour-long cramp. The race was far from a PR, but it signaled a life upswing after some years of inconsistent isolation. I’ve been thankful for the intermission and for returning to myself again—creativity, running, healthy debates—this past year. At no one’s pace but my own, I’m moving forward, one skip, shuffle, hop, trip, and run at a time. by @lpasarin

A #meditativemonday for you all. Recorded @kensinyc chilling out on the #RooseveltIsland Meditation Steps, this morning. Waves, boats, sirens, birds, buses, passerby chatter, strollers… her nose and ears experienced it all.
