The marathon can be a humbling experience. Just when you think you have it all figured out, it can smack you with reality. Yesterday was a tough go for me as my core, hamstrings and glutes just didn’t want to go past mile 13. Auto pilot after that. i’ll regroup and continue to try and figure it out 🤷🏻‍♂️
.
But whatever - I flipped the page really quickly and told myself that I wasn’t going to let that dictate my day. What a BEAUTIFUL DAY it was from start to finish! So many familiar faces out there supporting me and all the other runners. In reality that’s what makes the @nycmarathon amazing. It’s the people, the vibe, the electricity! they should run the marathon every day in NYC!
.
There is no marathon like the NYC MARATHON! Boston and Chicago come close but NYC IS tops- no contest!
.

A BIG thank you to everyone who sought me out to give me a shout out, a thumbs up or even run along side me! Gosh there were so many of you! You all lifted me up as there were many times where i really hated being out there 🤣 And just when i had those awful thoughts - there was a smiling face. Big thanks to @bebedenny& @telluride14 at mile 22 for the amazing IPA! Nothing else was working up until that point so I said screw it - and it tasted so damn good! 🍻
.
From my @wearenycrc teammates to. my @coachmedinanyc training partners and everyone else in between, thanks for the lift! I will step back for a few days and figure out what the winter season holds. Maybe some half marathons and give the full marathon a break for a season. But there will be more marathons again in the future!
.
To all the beautiful people out there yesterday, THANK YOU again! No marathon like the @nycmarathon !🙏🏽🙏🏽

🏃🏻🏃🏻🏃🏻The ramp up to the New York City Marathon is here! 🏃🏻🏃🏻🏃🏻
.
Since June I have shown up week after week to grind with this amazing group of individuals. Each Wednesday and Sunday when i wake up, the workouts hang over my head like a ton of bricks! But as soon as I show up to sunday long run or track Wednesdays, these folks make that disappear. For all the laps all the miles and all the jokes, we’re stronger today because we push each other all season. It’s been a great season of fitness and while I can use 6 weeks of a lighter load, I’ll miss these guys just a little 🤣🤣
.
What’s left for us now is to take what we’ve learned and execute on race day! To my #fastertogether training mates - you know what you gotta do- have a great @nycmarathon !
.
And a million thanks to @coachmedinanyc @ coach @marie11201 for their guidance and support! Can’t wait to do it all again! 🙌

In need of inspiration? You’re in the right place!
Rivkie and Lindsay took on the Berlin Marathon without much, if any, expectations and ended up blowing past all dreams and clock new personal bests!

•𝐑𝐢𝐯𝐤𝐢𝐞 𝟑:𝟎𝟑:𝟒𝟒
The focus of the season was set on performing at an Ironman just a week before the Berlin Marathon. However, the summer was difficult as Rivkie had to deal with persistent injuries. A triathlete at heart, she is known for her resilience and determination. She was able to successfully complete her Ironman and showed up to Berlin ready to celebrate. Without any expectations, she stood on the start line with a free mind and nothing to loose, she clocked the miles and finished with a 2-min PR!

•𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝟑:𝟓𝟓:𝟐𝟗
The comeback story we’ve been waiting for. Hurt in 2021 it took more than just some patience to stay involved in the sport, ease into participating again, to then learning to trust her body and race. The journey isn’t quite finished as we still work on this last part, but the 2024 Berlin Marathon will be remembered as a turning point. “𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘧 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘦! 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘐 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵.” We opted for a conservative race approach, and through a perfect execution Lindsay clocks a new PR her second Sub-4 ever!

We may not speak every day, but I’m reminded of you whenever I peer at my lock screen. It’s this image’s details that no one would notice, like our coats (one was yours; the houndstooth was purchased on my behalf; both are mine now) and the scarf I procured in Amsterdam before visiting you in Erquy. You demonstrated how to wrap it, tips I’ve since paid forward. It’s even how this picture is taken (you instructed: three-second timer with the phone clenched between my teeth!).

I look at my life and see all the ways you’ve influenced it. At what point have these inspirations become my own “particulars”?

Of course, there were similarities that built our kinship in the first place: an appreciation for British music, films, and literature; a tendency to dress in layers; a love for wolves; an obsession with the written word; a taste for whiskey; a penchant for cherishing handwritten correspondence and handmade gifts; and a desire for all things cozy. Over time, we agreed on Johnny Flynn’s vocals, East Village dive bars, Irish coffees, Breton winter beaches, and the importance of hats in our wardrobes.

Certainly, we have our differences. We are individuals, after all. I may not have the same admiration for period dramas and Jane Austen novels as you, but [it turns out] at the height of a pandemic, I would buy Emma streaming on Prime so we could watch the film together, albeit 3,400 miles apart.

I like this photo of us because I’m comforted by the memory of our hands wrapped around hot beverages. Much can be solved with a cuppa*. Perhaps that’s why I am fond of structuring difficult conversations and rapport building around coffee or tea.

That day was deceptively sunny as we wandered UES and Central Park. We stopped at a cafe located in a 19th-century church on 5th Ave to take a moment’s reflection and a break from the December wind. Your days in NYC were numbered, and we often struggle with the balance of “doing,” “archiving,” and “being” on trips. Leaning into the latter, we observed passersby and warmed ourselves with sips from our paper cups. It’s often the quiet moments I treasure most. -L

I recently posted this photo as an IG story after a networking event. I woke up to a stream of messages from friends, colleagues, and teammates. Too many chilli pepper emojis to count at 5am, I groggily prepared for my run.

I’d snapped the selfie because my oversized sweater matched the Frida Kahlo wallpaper, latter day selfies in their own right. A very “looked cute, might delete later” moment, atypical of me. I generally shrug off aesthetic compliments, but as more heart eye emojis appeared I took a closer look at the image. I noticed my confidence. I was looking at myself and I liked (like!) what I saw. I’ve finally grown into my body and self just as the stress lines and a “small pinch”* of chichos have caught up with me. At 39, I know what I’ve worked through to stand in front of this mirror. I have such appreciation for how far I’ve come and the opportunities that stretch before me.

Cheers! Thanks, Bye. was originally inspired by my early 30’s dating period.** From the first “cheers!” to the moment I hastily vanished from their lives (“thanks, bye.”), there was always an anecdote to recount. Authentic dating can also be a mirror to the experiences that build one’s character and my stories (memories) were born from this intersection.

CTB went through several attempts in various mediums that I never published because 1. I didn’t want to hurt any of the men I’d encountered or my family who may not always have been be portrayed kindly in my resulting tales 2. I put the project on hold while I survived a toxic five-year relationship. It’s for the best as it’s from this 30’s rollercoaster that I’ve confirmed my creative approach. CTB has since evolved into a life motto akin to “take it or leave it.” I value authenticity and surround myself with people who embrace their quirks. It’s a gift to reach for laughter especially in life’s painful moments.

*My ballet teacher would pinch our preteen bodies as they were taking shape. The goal was to stay prepubescent and slim. Part of why I eventually gave up formal dance was to have a better relationship with my body and food.

**Dating patterns that in my late 30’s are worse (SO many emotionally unavailables!)

No Aran Islands after all. We decided that a day trip that only allowed us 5 hours on shore didn’t justify the 30€ ferry ticket, and there was nowhere we could spend a night with Fauve…

This morning we left Galway and headed west into Connemara; I could barely look left at the sea and the islands, and cried quietly as we drove past Rossaveal. I don’t know if it was disappointment, frustration at being so close, or nostalgia, or the part of myself that knew that even if I did go back, it could never be the same as 7 years ago.
Hugo was very sweet and asked if I wanted to go for the day anyway, but I told him to drive on. As much as I wanted to share this wonderful place with him, it wasn’t his presence I was longing for…
And I realized that maybe, this is a trip for another time, a trip for the two of us to make together. And so, I still have the Return to the Aran Islands to look forward to!
