A magnetic field can make it easier, or harder, for electricity to flow through a material. A new paper from the Baranets Research Group, led by graduate student Md. Rashed Alam in collaboration with colleagues in the LSU Department of Physics and Astronomy, explores a compound that does both, depending on temperature.

The team discovered a new family of crystalline materials with unusually complex crystal structures and extensive disorder. Combined with intriguing electrical and magnetic properties, this work opens opportunities to explore new magnetic materials and materials that convert heat into electricity.

Small structures, big possibilities. ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Assistant Professor Sviatoslav Baranets and graduate student Thimira Kandabadage explore an underexplored family of rare-earth materials in a new chapter of the ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฌ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜—๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ด ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜Š๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜บ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜™๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Œ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ด, a scientific reference series with nearly 50 years of history.

Their chapter examines how incorporating different types of negatively charged ions within the same crystal creates a wide variety of crystal structures, with potential applications in semiconductor technologies, optics, and magnetic materials. It also highlights challenges in making these materials and opportunities for future research.

He first came to LSU as an undergraduate in 1966. When Dr. Frank Fronczek returned in 1976, he expected to stay one year. That year became a 50-year career helping shape generations of chemistry research.

From revealing thousands of crystal structures to guiding students through their first discoveries, Dr. Fronczek has left a lasting mark on LSU and the worldwide crystallography community.

As he enters retirement, one thing is clear: heโ€™s still bleeding Purple & Gold. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›

Associate Professor Noeฬmie Elgrishi received an NSF EPSCoR Research Fellows award to investigate how metal-organic cages capture PFAS and other charged contaminants.

Through a collaboration with Dr. Kristina HaฬŠkansson at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, the research team will examine why some cages capture certain molecules more effectively than others. Their findings could guide the development of more selective, reusable materials for water purification.๐Ÿ’ง

โญStudent Spotlightโญ
Samuel Owoso, Chemistry Graduate Student

Meet Samuel Owoso, a 5th-year Ph.D. candidate in the Zhang Research Group studying biomacromolecular and polymer chemistry. His research explores how molecular evolution leads to the emergence of functional protoproteins and investigates the dynamic mechanisms that enable sequence selection at lifeโ€™s origin. Samuel chose chemistry because it allows him to uncover how molecular interactions give rise to function and to translate those insights into new materials, one monomer at a time.

After graduation, Samuel hopes to pursue a career as a materials R&D scientist, creating functional and sustainable polymers that enable innovations in energy, biotechnology, and next-generation electronics. Outside the lab, he enjoys playing badminton, writing music, singing, and experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen. by @lsuchemistry

Controlling how and when molecules cross cell membranes is a challenge in drug delivery and biomedical engineering. Greater precision could enable therapies that activate only where and when theyโ€™re needed, reducing side effects and improving effectiveness.

In a new paper, the Garciฬa-Loฬpez Research Group reports a photoswitchable rotaxane that changes shape in response to light, doubling membrane permeability (29% โ†’ 59%) and demonstrating how light can precisely regulate molecular activity.

Their findings open new possibilities for light-responsive tools that could one day deliver drugs or modulate cells with pinpoint accuracy.
