He first came to LSU as an undergraduate in 1966. When Dr. Frank Fronczek returned in 1976, he expected to stay one year. That year became a 50-year career helping shape generations of chemistry research.

From revealing thousands of crystal structures to guiding students through their first discoveries, Dr. Fronczek has left a lasting mark on LSU and the worldwide crystallography community.

As he enters retirement, one thing is clear: he’s still bleeding Purple & Gold. 💜💛

Congratulations to the recipients of the Neil and Arlene Kestner College of Science Superior Graduate Student Scholarship! 🎉

The scholarship recognizes graduate students for their achievements and promise in materials science. It honors the late LSU Professor Emeritus Neil Kestner, a pioneer in theoretical physical and computational chemistry whose influential work on electron transfer was recognized by Rudolph “Rudy” Marcus during his 1992 Nobel Prize acceptance speech. Kestner was inducted into the LSU College of Science Hall of Distinction in 2017.

This year’s recipients are:
▪️Thimira Kandabadage Don, Chemistry PhD student, Baranets Research Group
▪️ Mohammed Mehedi Hasan, Physics PhD student, Magana-Loaiza Research Group
▪️ Md. Abdullah Al Mahmud, Chemistry PhD student, Pojman Research Group

Congratulations to these outstanding #LSUScience graduate students!

Congratulations to Gayomi Samarakoon, a PhD student in @lsuchemistry and a member of the Baranets Research Group, on receiving the Adah Proctor Sturgis Graduate Scholarship in Chemistry and Biochemistry!

The scholarship recognizes graduate students for their achievements and promise in chemistry and biochemistry. It honors Adah Proctor Sturgis, a trailblazing chemist who worked for the Ethyl Corporation. Her grandson, LSU alumnus Dr. Erich Sturgis, helped establish the scholarship to honor his grandmother and pioneering women in science.

Congratulations, Gayomi!

Congratulations to Dr. Víctor García-López, assistant professor from the @lsuchemistry on receiving an NSF CAREER Award! 🎉

Dr. García-López will study how light-responsive molecular machines can reshape lipid membranes and control their electrical properties. The research could help lay the foundation for bioinspired materials that emulate aspects of learning and memory while providing interdisciplinary training for LSU students and expanding STEM outreach across Louisiana.

A tiny molecular change could lead to better vaccines.🔬

In this week's Summer Research Series, @LSUChemistry Ph.D. candidate Bailey Broderick, a member of Dr. Amy Xu's research group, shares how her research uncovered a surprising change in phospholipid structures when aluminum adjuvants are introduced.

Understanding these interactions could help improve the design of future vaccine adjuvants.

🎥 Watch Bailey explain the science behind the discovery.

Next up in our Summer Research Series! Meet Louisiana native and LSU Ph.D. candidate Carsyn Travis. This summer, she's conducting research in Dr. Fatima Rivas' Lab on the fourth floor of LSU's Chemistry & Materials Building, where she works alongside Dr. Taotao Ling to develop and test natural product derivatives that could help lead to future therapeutics for one of the most aggressive forms of breast cancer, triple-negative breast cancer. 🔬

💛🧪💜🎓Oops, I forgot to tell y'all I finally graduated!

The chemistry department is probably tired of me, lmao. Anywho, on a serious note, thank you to LSU for not just giving me a degree but also for providing the space to learn and grow as a person. I had the chance to work on research with some really cool people, which led me to present at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research. I also joined clubs that offered leadership opportunities and skills that helped me grow. I got to travel to the American Chemical Society conference twice, be published, and serve as an editor for “The Cypress Review.” Lastly, I want to thank the professors, mentors, and friends who have supported me along the way. Geaux Tigers! 💜🥼💛🎓

🎓 Graduating Student Spotlight: Vanessa Hulse
Vanessa is wrapping up her LSU journey this Saturday as she graduates with her Ph.D. in chemistry! Originally from New York, Vanessa earned her B.S. in chemistry from St. Bonaventure University and her master’s degree in chemistry from Rochester Institute of Technology before continuing her academic journey at LSU.

🧪 What she loves most about science:
Vanessa loves that chemistry helps her better understand the world around her and how nature works. Her passion for science began in high school thanks to her chemistry teacher, Mr. Corey DuBois, who introduced her to the chemistry behind soap making through an independent study project. That experience inspired her to pursue the field.

🔬 Research and Perseverance:
As a member of the Elgrishi Research Group, Vanessa worked on a research project that evolved into an exciting scientific journey filled with unexpected discoveries and new questions. In light of research challenges and setbacks along the way, Vanessa remained committed to her research — a dedication that ultimately led to a publication in ACS Measurement Science Au. Reflecting on the experience, Vanessa shared, “I stuck with it anyway in pursuit of understanding what was going on and why, and I’m really glad I did.”

🌍 Beyond the Lab:
Outside of the lab, Vanessa enjoys crocheting, painting, and spending time with her two cats. She taught herself how to crochet during the pandemic, and it quickly became one of her favorite hobbies. Vanessa has also shared her love of science through outreach activities like Super Science Saturday, where making slime with future scientists became a crowd favorite.

📣 Her Advice to Students:
“Read as many articles as you can as soon as you can. Science is always changing, so understanding current peer-reviewed research is incredibly important. You never know when the information you read will come in handy!”
