The AoE DoT on this glaze is insane. Really cool effect though! I threw, trimmed, and bisqued these cups in some previous videos and did a small collab with @brianleeceramics to see what his glaze would look like on them.

I think the glaze crawled because it was bubbly, but the spray application came out quite nice, I hope the photo in the reel does it justice. I’ll get some professional pics taken of these eventually.

We’re gonna make a lot more, DM if you want one.

Quick history/geography lesson about jingdezhen, and why it became so historically significant. Of all the places in the world, and even china, why did this city in particular become the place where pottery and porcelain flourished?

The reason is because of its location where there were, luckily, lots of pine trees in the surrounding mountains for firing the kilns, and also lots of clay in the mountains. In this video, I show where jingdezhen is located geographically to explain why jingdezhen became the porcelain capital. The imperial kiln ruins, a main tourist attraction in jingdezhen, are located along the chang river, which is how porcelain was able to be moved from a non-coastal city all the way to the capital and to the rest of the world. There were also other waterways and land paths that connected jingdezhen to the middle east along the silk road, which is also where a lot of the trade happened.

Kaolin village is a tiny little place and pretty far out from jdz, but it’s cool to see a bit of the history associated with jingdezhen.

Final reveal! I’ll make a couple more edits with this later but for now i’m pretty happy with how this process video came out. This sonic mask was made during a workshop taught by @josecbs_404 at @7000sqm. It has two whistles inside to make sound from two separate resonance chambers. The decoration on top was done entirely with slip and underglaze, and it did not have a final layer of glaze. I’m taking art influence from different parts of both modern and ancient china which you can see in the carving and surface decoration. I hope you like this!

Final result tomorrow!! I made a mask into an instrument! it’s still under construction since I need to do more surface decoration but I think it’s at a good place rn with @josecbs_404 sonic mask workshop. I made this inspired by an antelope skull with forward facing ey holes to be more predatory, but I think it still reads a bit like a ceramic antelope skull.

The surface decoration is going to be done in a peking opera style mask which I think will contrast nicely with the skull texture. Stay tuned if you wanna see the result!

These are all whistles! Not yet glazed, prefire work.
Just having some fun with some classmates in @josecbs_404’s sonic mask class at @7000sqm

I made a fully functioning whistle from a wheel thrown donut! So fun combining different techniques that i’m learning. @josecbs_404 did a really great job explaining theory on why a ceramic whistle works out or doesn’t, and it comes down to how cleanly the air is being cut from the mouthpiece to the resonance chamber. A key tip to success is making the mouthpiece and the opening proportionally big to the piece; I started with a small opening, but it would create a lot of dissonance since the amount of air I was blowing into the donut couldn’t escape in time, so widening it solved the issue.

Keri in mind this is all leading up to creating different channels and instruments that allow a mask to breathe and sing. I think i’ll keep playing around with thrown whistles after this still. pretty neat technique.

Made some new things and learned a whole bunch about how to make whistles and aerophones with @josecbs_404 at @7000sqm. You’ll have to take his class in the future to learn about the specifics. All of this is leading up to creating masks that can also produce sound.

In today’s class, we learned about how to make a pucuy (or punkuy) and a primitive whistle. There’s a lot of theory about how resonance works and how the shape and direction of both the airflow and the holes will alter pitch. There’s a lot more to learn and i’m excited for what comes next.

🚨trilingual reel🚨

it’s kinda nuts how long these subtitles took. One of my favorite things about jingdezhen is how international it is, and the ability it has to attract artists from around the world. The talent that exists here brings in different skills, ideas, and ways of creating that allow you to really broaden your understanding of what’s possible with art and the material at hand.

@josecbs_404 is teaching a class at @7000sqm june 1 - june 10 in jdz so i’m excited to share what we’re gonna learn bc it’s fun to see latin culture intersect with chinese culture from an american lens. Reach out to them if you want to get registered!

丙丁柴窑拍的! super nice brutalist architecture in mountains of 景德镇: bingding wood kiln. just your usual run of the mill rich person hiring an award winning architect under the guise of preserving the art of building wood kilns by hand nbd

You might’ve seen me try this pov so I wanted to explain how these pieces are thrown! The process of these giant vats and vases are all done by hand since the effort of building a machine to make them far outweighs the labor of making them by hand. There’s a whole second part to this process where they’re dried out in the sun, then stacked together in order to be attached. The process of attaching the thrown forms is done by painting a layer of slip over the seam and then trimming of the excess once’s it’s entirely built up. This is done because at this scale, any trapped air bubble will cause the piece to explode in the kiln.

Did you like this history lesson an intro on giant wares? Let me know your thoughts!

What a privilege it was to try out centering such a big piece! In total, more than 500lbs of clay would be added to this, and it was what the masters were throwing at the beginning of the video.

Centering at this scale is an entirely different concept since it requires you to push down (something I did not realize at first) instead of immediately going into coning up and down. For the most part, the person with their hands at the very bottom (in this video, me) is the one steering the metaphorical clay ship. Everyone else’s hands are there to apply pressure without altering the direction of the person in charge. Normally it’s the owner of the factory who’s steering since he’s the one responsible for most of the outcome, so it was nice that he let me try my hand.

I’m in jingdezhen, where this is one of the few remaining factories where big porcelain is made. In fact, all the equipment necessary to handle this work is custom made. You can’t even buy a wheel that has the amount of torque necessary to throw at this size. I’ll put together another video showing the process and what it’s like from not a first person perspective.

Special thanks to @bth_jingdezhen for putting this together!
