PRESS RELEASE (excerpt):
금마타리(Infinite Love) is a response to the way sound has been instituted as a weapon at the Koreas’ Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

Yim choreographs from a consumed place, asking performers to engage with material from found and fictional archives surrounding the 38th Parallel as if it is matter to be swallowed and digested on a cellular level. As each performer moves from assimilative knowledge toward sensation, they also move from the conscious realm to the unconscious, the hard to grasp, and the virtual. Utilizing somatic inquiry and embodied disability practices, they consider how bodily dissociation might serve as an analogue for the experience of virtuality to interrupt and disturb a disembodiment shaped by U.S. militarism within a global past that continues to unfold into the present. Kate spreads her arms like wings on a vertical diagonal. Behind her is Cynthia who leans against the wall with their arms up. by @lu_yim

I am so in love with @physical_education.life: @alliehankins @takataka.takataka.takataka and #keyongaskin

We started out as friends gathering over wine and snacks to talk about dance and performance and 11 years later we continue to shape-shift and still cultivate that vibe.

These past ten days we facilitated and performed at SFDI (Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation) @velocity_seattle and connected with other incredible artists and students of dance. I was so impressed and enthralled by the high level of heart and curiosity in each class.

We also produced our own mini-fest in Portland, OR SAY WHEN @pwnwpdx. Thank you Cosmos Dark @browncalculus , #jesspretty, and @midorihirose for your stunning performances. And I finally got to share the film I filmed in Portland.

I am feeling blessed.
I would do it again. taken in 12th Avenue Arts by @lu_yim

Bottom Edge Air
Mabou Mines, July 2026
:
:
This summer we had an opportunity to mount this work again, this time in Mabou Mines’ blackbox theater. The starkness of tech and the proscenium orientation created a deeper vacuum within the voids of the work. Clinical. Suspended. Post-Meditated. Also, if medicated, a mix of Gabapentin and Ketamine.

Deepest gratitude to the cast and their deeply researched performances over this year, and the creative power of Zo, Laurel and Shana, who illuminated the vision with their brilliance/skills/auras.

Bottom Edge Air
Re/Venue "And..." Festival at Mabou Mines
New York, NY
July 26, 2026

Description:
Bottom Edge Air begins as a series of overlapping duets with two subjects foregrounded, Musk’s personal Tesla “Roadster” and “Starman”, a mannequin astronaut, who in 2017 were launched into space, as part of SpaceX’s project to colonize Mars. Trailing this duet is the entrance of Luigi Mangione, Baby, Military Man #1 + #2, and an innocuous black case containing an inflatable air mattress, later revealed alongside a bedpan.
Through a process of somatically driven character development, each of the 6 performers express distinct bodily logics of sick time, carrying and exchanging embodiments for one another.
Assisted by live audio description, their journey from subjects of the state to surrogates for us, unfolds through complex choreographic sequencing. Similar to footnotes in a book, the AD offers reference points that assist in the cinematic unfolding of a world distorting: a post-capitalist neo-fascist space-wasteland collapsing into anaesthesia-induced surgical scenes. As the audience witnesses their illogical fate, the choreography invites a reflection on alternate ways of being within this manufactured crisis we share.

Metal carcasses baking in the sun, vultured over and rusting out. I notice some with airbags open and pushing against their broken windows, and someone is sledghammering off car parts in the other aisle.

I am in the 100's in SE Portland, OR, a blue collar part of town thats buddied up against the strip where Asian-run restaurants and sex workers turn lights on and off at various times of day.

I have zero tools with me so I proceed to scavange like the little rat I am, or as zo put it, a hunter gatherer, searching for car fragments at the "pick-n-pull" to be used in this upcoming performance, a site of ruin where you can't ignore the death that got us here.

I hope you can join and see them in action.

Central to Lu’s @lu_yim work is a profound relationship to somatic movement and the adaptability of the body itself. Their performances are informed by the different needs and abilities of each performer, allowing movement and choreography to emerge through bodily responsiveness rather than rigid structure.

Throughout the work, bodies move together and apart, at times colliding, supporting, or dissolving into one another within imagined landscapes that exist as fractured parts of a whole.

Congratulations to Lu Yim @lu_yim a Fall 2025 Tallichet Freedman Foundation micro grant recipient! We’re thrilled to celebrate their work!

“I am an artist working through sound, performance, and embodiment practices. What is felt in my work is a dialogue with both hyper-sensorial and dissociative dysphorias. What I attempt to make material is the pressurized interior spaces of feeling and being that sensation creates. I work in service to these metaphysical realities by attentively giving form for these experiences to live and communicate autonomously from the visible performing body.

Oriented towards healing actions, I integrate sick time into my collaborations and group work. This means slowing down a moment within a sequence of events and returning to a forgotten sensation. My interest is to embody time as infinite, and to materialize possible ways that sensation, distortion, and pain can become a liberatory force.”

GHOST BARRELS
a new performance
w @lu_yim @funtofuntofunto @arg___art
thursday january 8, 7p
free with rsvp
at @sick_center , @recessart

please join our year of circling something to get closer to. since the spring we’ve been talking in trio, our starting point is the apparition of once-in-material-world-but-now-nonexistent historical “bed pianos” built for horizontal in valid players. we follow layered tangents from there, together, into sick score-making, fictional music, the legend of the first piano in Korea, music with colonial violent ends (“play the melody with your trigger finger!”), and tendrils of connection and permission between disabled artists.

masked, with air purifiers, and wheelchair accessible with accessible bathroom. email info@recessart.org if you have any access questions or requests. taken in Recess by @lu_yim
