What if the first step towards recovery wasn’t a conversation, but a moment of recognition?

That question sits at the heart of a project by Dr Emidio Abrantes (CRI Aveiro/ICAD), inviting designers to rethink how communication can support community health through empathy, accessibility, and human connection.

In response, Lucas Mota explores the emotional terrain of addiction through AI-assisted imagery and symbolic visual storytelling. His campaign doesn’t depict addiction as a statistic or a diagnosis; it reveals its ambiguity, isolation, temptation, and hope, encouraging viewers to linger with emotions that are often left unseen.

Rather than asking how design can inform, the project asks something more profound: Can design help someone recognise themselves before they ask for help?

Perhaps the most meaningful interventions begin with a feeling that says, “This is about me.”
