Scaffold for the living city, chunk models
with Jaeseo Choi @choi.jae.seo
advised by Lyndon Neri @nerilyndon

Proposed for the contested site of the demolished Manhattan detention complex in Chinatown, this project tests whether enabling the vita activa can preempt carceral logics with a hybrid system of social housing, collective production, and public performance. Rather than removing agency as the prison does, this project returns it to residents, transforming the site into a space where residents can actively shape both their environment and their public presence by borrowing from the logic of New York scaffold.
The scaffold becomes permanent as single columns bundle up into load bearing structure and utility pipes. Modular wall units plug into rails in the triangular grid of the floor plates, while a secondary structural layer of circulation, egress, and balconies form a porous boundary between interior and exterior life. This system enables a continuous negotiation between private dwelling and collective visibility: domestic, commercial, and civic functions emerge though loose zoning rules informed by proximity, exposure, and use. A ground-floor woodshop and makerspace extends this logic, allowing residents to directly modify their units—collapsing the distinction between designer and inhabitant, and positioning building as an ongoing act rather than a finished object.

1/16” = 1’ site model
Site and lean-to drawings, concrete pad animation
with Nolan Hill

Located on Jamaica Bay in southeast Brooklyn, this project converts an old airport runway to an unconventional gateway campground for urban residents to engage with camping and nature.

A softening border between tarmac and vegetation is evident on the site, producing an edge that runs eastward toward the ocean and creates a highly charged joint between two conditions. Our proposal disrupts this existing interference by creating a hybrid space in which the concrete pads of the tarmac are relocated into the rewilded area. This produces a pixellated system of circulation that opens up voids for plant life to creep back into the vast paved area. By cutting up and reusing existing concrete, the impact of the highest carbon footprint material is reduced while rewilding the massive tarmac. When moving these concrete pads, the previous pads become the pathway for construction equipment to place the next concrete pad.

The concrete also acts as the footing for a winding rammed-earth spine that spans the site. Rising and falling from the ground, the spine creates semicircular nooks that support varied groupings of lean-tos with different degrees of enclosure, thermal buffering, and privacy. The construction of the lean-tos and berm are integrated, with elevated sleeping bunks rammed in and formwork supports reused in the lean-to structure. The berm also acts as an ADA ramp which provides access to the truss level of the comfort station, allowing campers to gather in the truss and on the roof.

Sneckdown // Construction Analysis Drawings
A sneckdown, snowy neckdown, reveals latent urban potential: unplowed snow exposes surplus roadway that can be reclaimed for pedestrian use. This drawing superimposes three temporal states: original condition, snow accumulation, and permanent redesign to trace the transformation of a three-way intersection in Philadelphia into pedestrian-focused infrastructure. The project positions the sneckdown as both evidence and catalyst, translating ephemeral spatial conditions into lasting urban form.

Scaffold for the living city, 3/4” unit chunk model
with Jaeseo Choi
advised by Lyndon Neri

This proposal operates as a light steel armature to produce a condition of adaptability. The scaffold creates bundles of permanent structure and utility pipes. Modular wall units plug into rails in the triangular grid of the floor plates, while a secondary structural layer of circulation, egress, and balconies form a porous boundary between interior and exterior life. Our project tested 5 different living scenarios to see whether our kit of parts proposal can support diverse modes of living. This models shows the two level multigenerational unit:

The Wong Family
A multi-generational immigrant family, the Wongs are organized across two levels. Grandparents, Wai (72) and Shun (75), live on the first floor for accessibility, while their son David (45), his wife Clara (43), and their children Kevin (12) and Sophie (9) occupy the second floor—with the option to shift downstairs as mobility needs evolve.

The Alvarez Household
Carlos Alvarez (41), a pianist and music teacher, lives and works from home, offering piano lessons to neighborhood children. His unit accommodates acoustic needs and flexible scheduling, blending domestic and instructional space.

The Chen Siblings
International students Jian Chen (22) and Dan Chen (20) share a unit designed around parity and independence. With equal-sized rooms and shared study space, their home supports both academic focus and a balanced sibling dynamic.

The Lin Family
Mei Lin (38) is a single mother raising four children—Jaden (14), Lili (11), Marcus (8), and Anya (5). Their home prioritizes shared space and adaptability, supporting a dynamic, high-energy household with room for both privacy and collective life.

The Rivera-Kim Family
Daniel Rivera (36) and Eric Kim (34) are raising their daughter, Maya (6), in a home that emphasizes openness and inclusivity. Their space supports family life while remaining connected to the broader community network of the building.

Split ADU
Princeton, Fall 2024
Core I exercise I with Anda French @french2d

While the single-family home is synonymous with the American suburb, this ADU challenges the intent of the zoning code and acts as a middle ground between the standard single-family home and the Chinese “siheyuan”, or courtyard house, to bridge the gap between individual and communal living, enabling diverse models of connection in between. Instead of a strict division between fenced off lots or a fully shared courtyard, a slight bend in the building achieves a respectful connection between the two units, creating both overlapping yards and private outdoor spaces. To facilitate chance encounters with the other family on the site, a generous interior front porch passage separates the two zones of the ADU. In addition to helping combat the loneliness of aging, this open passage encourages movement and fresh air, serving as a flexible space that can enhance the programming of the ADU. It operates in the gray area of the zoning code, which doesn’t allow for covered porches that are oriented outwards of the site.

Immersive Waterfront

While most designers are able to directly manipulate the product of their design, architects are in the unique position of primarily or even solely working through representations. Largely ocularcentric and disembodied, traditional representational methods – such as plans, sections, physical models, and renders – struggle to simulate bodily presence and motion while neglecting other senses. Representing and experiencing architecture through virtual reality head mounted displays offer a way to integrate the body into the act of viewing architecture. With the capacity to simulate scale, motion, sound, and atmosphere, head-mounted displays present an opportunity to represent space closer to the lived spatial experience. This project employs virtual reality to simulate a waterfront that one can enter and be submerged within, surrounded by life.

Water has many qualities that make it suited to a virtual reality experience. Water is uniquely sensory. It is often in motion, dynamically interacting with light while producing unique sounds. Thus representing it accurately in traditional architectural methods is extra challenging. While the built environment is often surrounded by water, it is typically inaccessible, only able to be viewed at a distance. It is also intrinsically tied to the infrastructure and ecological health of a city. With an immersive experience, water can be shown to be a medium that can hold life, such as lively fish, or waste, such as trash and pollution. By allowing viewers to enter the water and see the water change while being submerged, a closer connection between one’s self and the water can be made.

This project was developed using Unity and deployed on Meta Quest 3 headsets. It featured geometry modeled in Rhino3D supplemented with downloaded assets. Two custom scripts written in C sharp enabled underwater effects and water quality change

Final version of exploded wormseye 🪱 from last semester and a rammed earth construction sequence diagram
with Nolan Hill

Beneath the truss canopy, circular voids are carved into the berm to accommodate the office, bathrooms, and showers. A corresponding positive mass forms vertical circulation, as the berm thickens, opens, and folds to allow access to these spaces. The circular geometry takes advantage of rammed earth’s high compressive strength, allowing the walls to function simultaneously as structure and retaining wall.

Through the interaction of heavy earth and lightweight truss systems, three distinct spatial conditions are created. At ground level, circular rammed-earth rooms contain the bathroom program, with carefully placed light apertures. The truss forms a shaded canopy for a multipurpose gathering space accommodating school groups, meals, and recreationall activities. At the truss level, campers observe activities below while moving through a field of structure and dappled light. Finally, a wood deck cut into the corrugated metal roof provides access to panoramic ocean views and rooftop gathering spaces particularly fit for watching the sunrise, with ramps and towers making both truss and roof fully
