Join us on 15 October at 6pm at @ccwm_sydney for the opening of Victor Ehikhamenor: Undoing the City, Making Home.

An artistic response to historical research on the long-term effects of extractive colonialism and communities’ strategies for surviving it. Focusing on the damage fueled by oil extraction in the Niger Delta, the flows of people it has precipitated towards coastal Nigeria and outward to the world, and their desire to remake home — from the creeks of the Delta to the suburbs of Sydney.

The exhibition also explores the role of the artist not only as a narrator and interpreter of human experience, but as an archivist: putting into the historical record stories that might otherwise be forgotten.

As my birthday long weekend comes to an end, I want to take a minute to thank the hundreds of friends and family who reached out from the four corners of the world! 🌍

Thank you so much! You made my diasporic birthday much more bearable! ❤️

Cosmopolitan 🍸 also helped—and yes, the colour matches both my outfit and my makeup. Like so many things that have worked well in my life, it was purely accidental! 😀

Preparing tomorrow's seminar on Islam in Europe.

When we think of medieval and modern Europe, we often imagine a uniformly Christian continent separated from the Islamic world.
Yet cities such as Córdoba, Palermo and Venice tell a different story.
For centuries, knowledge, people, artistic styles, institutions and commodities circulated across the Mediterranean. Islamic and European histories were not separate histories. They were deeply interconnected.
Perhaps the question is not: "How did Islam influence Europe?" but rather:
"How was Europe shaped through centuries of interaction with Islamic societies?"
