POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Last night at Gleebooks, I sat down with the wonderful Amani Haydar to talk about my memoir, The Sky Is Concave, and I’m still carrying the warmth of that room with me.
We spoke about the power we have within. How agency can start as early as 17 years of age. How making our own decisions, even in limiting circumstances, can lead us to the life we imagine for ourselves. And the beauty of mathematics when it is coupled with poetry (yeah don’t be surprised, they do couple).

Amani, thank you for your generous questions and for the way your own work speaks to identity, womanhood and resilience. Thank you to Gleebooks for hosting us, and to everyone who came, listened and shared their own stories with me afterwards.

If you couldn’t make it, The Sky Is Concave is available now at Gleebooks and wherever books are sold (link in bio). You can also join our next banquet on the 27th of Oct (link in bio).

Were you there? Tell me your favourite moment in the comments 👇

I had the privilege of taking these photos @ccwm_sydney during a workshop facilitated by @blacktownarts where African heritage artists in Sydney are mentored by @victorsozaboy and saw the thought process behind curation in a gallery space as they installed the show opening 15th of October.
About the black and white film photos. They aren’t edited. The negative itself has a mix of negative and positive tonalities. At first i saw it as a failure on my part for not getting my chemistry right or fogging the film but after listening to @victorsozaboy speak about process i embraced the “mistake” and decided to lean into it…a new addition into my photographic language.

Will be very pleased to share my research alongside Lucia Sorbera @luciasorbera and Ghasan Saaid at the Chau Chak Wing Museum this coming Thursday (14th of May) on our panel titled “Creative Histories: Artists in the Archives”.

We’ll be talking all things archives - how and why they do and don’t work. Who defines what they are, and why?

In particular, I’ll share about my most recent research (and films) that explore ecological imperialism, through the tracing I’ve done of the colonial industrialisation of eucalypt monocultures in Morocco in the 20th century.

Please join us! Tickets in my bio.

The Feminist Roots of Human Rights in Egypt' di @luciasorbera, @uc_press 2025.

Lucia Sorbera's new book Biography of a Revolution uncovers the feminist roots of human rights in Egypt, bringing to light the women whose courage and ideas shaped a nation’s struggle for freedom. It’s both a historical account and a reminder of how activism, resilience, and vision can transform societies.

Just finished reading Lucia’s “Biography of a Revolution”. I’m deeply touched and proud for having been part of telling the story and part of the journey. Such a valuable piece of work that gathers a series of interrelated intimate and relational stories, charting in detail the entanglements between women’s aspirations in Egypt across a century of politics and friendships. A historical analysis that innovatively deploys decolonial and indigenous feminist epistemologies, bringing women’s, gender, and feminist history into the center of Egypt’s political, social, and intellectual history. Congratulations @luciasorbera #book #books #bookstagram #women #biografia #biography #egypt #egypt🇪🇬

I had the pleasure and honor of contributing my portrait of @patrickzaki to the book Imprisoning a Revolution, curated by the Antigone collective and published by University of California Press @uc_press.

It’s an important and necessary project that brings together writings, letters, poems, and artworks created by people imprisoned in #Egypt for political reasons since 2011. A chorus of voices that refuse to be silenced by repression, and instead resist through words and creativity.

Inside are journalists, activists, artists, but also ordinary citizens — all united by the violence of a regime that fears any form of dissent. Their testimonies speak not only about Egypt, but about the world we live in, where even democracies too often choose to look the other way.

To participate with the image of Patrick — a symbol of freedom and resistance — means reaffirming that art can be a political tool, capable of crossing walls and shedding light where others want only darkness.

This book offers no easy answers, but it preserves the memory, dignity, and strength of those who refuse to give up. And it reminds us that the very least we can do is not remain silent.
