What I thought Education and Learning work looked like in music V what it ACTUALLY looks like ✨🎤🪩🌈🐠🖍💭🎉🤩🎶🎹

I originally thought I wasn’t made for the world of education as I didn’t know what it actually consisted of (and I was particularly rubbish at peripatetic teaching). I then found out all the amazingness that is included in Education and Learning in music and felt like I found where I belonged as an educator and practitioner.

It’s so funny to me, we’re used to the idea of varied repertoire- there’s specific genres, eras, composers that fit with you. And I really think it’s the same for Education and Learning. There is something for everyone, you just have to be open enough (and supported by the industry enough!) to find it 🪄🌙🌟🍩🌱☀️

A couple of weeks ago I presented four different concerts, with four organizations, in five days.

🎤 Amazing Animals Around the World with @liverpool_philharmonic conducted by @kaapoijas

🎤 Chimpanzees of Happy town with @ensemble360 and @musicintheround

🎤 Orchestra Unwrapped with @philharmonia_orchestra conducted by @oliviafitzgeraldclarke

🎤 A concert with @bbcsso conducted by John Logan (more info. soon).

These concerts took weeks of planning, script writing, meetings, editing, practicing and memorising, and I was quite nervous going into the patch. But whenever that happens, I try and focus as much as possible on the music- after all, that's what it's all about!

The more I present concerts, the more I remember and realise it's not about my voice, or me. And actually, if I do my job well, people don't notice me doing my job (if that makes sense?!).

I love working with the amazing musicians, wonderful audiences and magical backstage teams who make it all happen 🪄 🪄 🪄 🪄

I feel very grateful to do this as my job. And when the music starts (or the housekeeping announcement is played 😎) and that clarity and focus hits, I feel like I'm exactly in the right place, and I never, and will never, take that for granted 🌈 🎨 ✨ 💭 🎵 💎

Five years ago, when I first worked for @bbcsso I suggested to them that I thought they should do some arts in prisons work. And when I became Associate Artist in 2020, I decided to pick Arts in Prisons as one of the areas we would focus on… fast forward three years and we finally felt we’d found the right project, and decided to approach HMP Low Moss to see if we could run three Music sessions with Dads and Grandads, and their family unit 🎶 🎵

This project has been one of the best professional experiences I’ve ever had, and I have learned so much. And I cannot wait to build on our relationship with the families, Scottish Prison Service and @earlyyearsscotland 🚀🪩✨🎶🪐

A lovely wee clip about our @bbcsso concerts in HMP Low Moss in April this year. Not only was the concert repertoire put together by the some of the men in education (including some fantastic new arrangements done by a couple of BBC SSO players), but I had co-presenters for each concert. There was also a display of the artwork that the men did in response to Holst’s Saturn and Mars- another project that we ran in January and February of this year.

Our Art and Music project started off with a brilliant session led by @kirsty_matheson_art about the connection between music and art, and we then had three sessions with various musicians, in which the men could respond to the live music with a range of art activities led by the incredible art teacher at Low Moss.

Our final bit of work this year was a family concert for eighteen families; there was music, drawing and dancing!

So, so great to be back for our third year of activity, and feel very, very grateful to both the Low Moss and BBC SSO teams for making it happen.

Another Orchestra Unwrapped series with the brilliant, brilliant @philharmonia_orchestra 🎤🎤

OU is for KS2 young people and is all about experiencing the magic, and power, of live orchestral music. This year, over six concerts (in Basingstoke, Leicester, Canterbury, Bedford and London) we celebrated 80 years of the orchestra ♥️🎉🎂

In each concert there was a singing and signing moment with an amazing song that the sensational @emilybardenmusic wrote, beautifully orchestrated by @adrianvarela500 🎵🎵

Such an excellent education, production and video team. And always so great to work with wonderful BSL interpreters (@angienewman19 and @katelabno ) and lovely conductors (@mlynch.conductor @mertyalnix and @julierossland ) ♥️🪩🪄

How is it already almost the end of April?! ☀️ 🌸

A couple of weeks ago, after eight years of working with the @bbcsso I had the absolute joy of presenting two concerts for P4-7 for the first time at City Halls in Glasgow 🎤🎤🎤

We went on an epic adventure through the elements; Fire 🔥 Air ☁️ Water 🌊 and Earth 🌍 with music from Brave, How To Train Your Dragon and by @errollyn9552 Laura Shigihara, Grieg and Bizet 🎵🚀

Concerts like this take a village to make happen- and the BBC Team, including Production, Learning, Marketing, and musicians, maddddde it happen ♥️♥️
A huge thank you to @stefanoboccacci for stepping in last minute, and @delyana.lazarova who helped shape the beautiful rep. 🌒🪐🪩 And a massive thanks to the wonderful @glasgowcreate team who helped support us at every step and who helped us pack the hall.

Two fantastic audiences filled with amazing young people and teachers/ support staff, and the memory of spontaneous clapping to Bizet and singing along
to Moana will stay with me for a long time ♥️♥️

A couple of weeks ago, I had the absolute joy of presenting 7 concerts with the @thecbso to 12,000 KS2 and KS3 students at @bmusic_ltd Symphony Hall 🎤 🎤 🎤

The programme was all about space 👽 👾 🚀 🪐 🌏 🌟 and featured music from @daiweimusic Laura Shigihara, John Williams and Ludwig Van Beethoven 🎵 🎶

It was wonderful to have four amazing musicians to speak at each concert (this is a first for me in all the hundreds of concerts I’ve presented). And to work with ACTUAL superstars @ellie.slorach and @rapportbsl was so brilliant, and the whole week felt totally doable thanks to the energy and excellence of the Learning and Production team.

And to top it off, TWELVE THOUSAND YOUNG PEOPLE GETTING TO EXPERIENCE LIVE MUSIC WITH LIVE MUSICIANS. A dream project ♥️♥️

January round up… ✨💥🌂🐝🪴

Been off of socials for a wee while as I started off the year with lots of things having to be written and created. And shock horror, turns out I’m more focused and creative without the appeal of opening my phone and scrolling, often without realising it 🚀💃🏻

It has been a good month, some lovely projects and some really wonderful colleagues. But there have also been a couple of things that have shaken my confidence but ultimately have been an excellent opportunity to put my boundaries in place 🪩🪩🪩 and very much implement the vibe of 2026

There have also been a couple of projects this month that have truly reminded me why I do what I do, the projects where you feel like you’re exactly where you’re meant to be, with the exact people you’re meant to be with. But as always, they’re often not the ones shared on socials 🐚

Feel very lucky to be ending another tax year (😅) doing what I love ♥️

November🌙❄️💫 Still can’t quite believe that we are at this point in the year. A bit of a quieter end to the month for me which has been good after a busy old time. Lovely projects, some shifting perspectives and oh so grateful. But also the inevitable WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE WHERE IS MY MOTIVATION as soon as I do have some proper time off. Freelance life 😬♥️💃🏻
1. Kicking off the year’s Orchestra Unwrapped concerts with @philharmonia_orchestra at @anvil_arts This year for OU we’re celebrating 80 years of this wonderful orchestra 🎤🎤🎤
2. Leading some training for @starcatchersuk Working with some amazing Early Years staff to write songs 🎶
3. A wee patch with @bbcsso that started with some amazing training from @davidmunnmusic @sistemascotland then we did some pop up concerts and workshops in @bignoisegovanhill primary schools. I love this slide and it’s the perfect reminder that you should be asking yourself 100000 different questions before, ‘can we talk about behavioural management/ how can I get them to listen to ME’.

5. Attended a brilliant conversation, Artists’ Care: Supervision and Care for Artists working in Complex Settings (loved hearing from @hearmeoutmusic and @irenetaylortrustmusic ) 🙏🏻🙏🏻

A bit late, but a wee October round-up…

Don’t know why, but I do really like posting monthly round-ups, especially if the month has been a bit of a whirlwind. Nice to reflect on cool projects with brilliant colleagues and lovely audiences/ people attending workshops 🌟 ⭐️
I am very aware that I post highlights and don’t share the moments of worry or nerves or emaiiiils or invoices or tax or justifying fees or (some) employed people trying to fill my diary with unpaid meetings when it could’ve just been an email… But it’s all learning, and I am very grateful to be able to do what I do ♥️💭💫🎤

Throwback to a couple of Sundays ago with @auroraorchestra 🌈🎤💄🪩🎵🎨📮 Swipe to the last photo for how I feel about this show/ my job…

We performed a new show, Meet the Instruments, made by Jane Mitchell, music by @iainfarrington and words by @kate_wakeling , and set by @celestelangree 🎨🎵

It was such a beautiful project to be part of and as always, the brilliant team of musicians that Aurora put together are just pure joy, and their production team are second to nonnnnne @anahitafal @tarancollins @alana_grady ✨✨✨ and loved working with my fellow presenter, @larastubbs 🪩🪩

Narrating and singing are two of my very favourite things, and I feel the luckiest to have been involved in this show ♥️♥️ My favourite moment was the audience giving it everything for the last song- and the dancing! Was just the best, best day 🪩🪩
