Frieze London | Lucy + Jorge Orta and Michael Rakowitz

At Frieze London, Lucy + Jorge Orta’s Wadi Hanifah Embroidery Landscapes bring together botanical specimens native to Saudi Arabia’s Wadi Hanifah valley and geometric motifs drawn from Al Sadu, the traditional weaving practice of Bedouin women. Combining ecological observation with textile traditions, the works reflect on cultural heritage, resilience, and environmental change.

Also featured are selections from Michael Rakowitz’s ongoing series The invisible enemy should not exist, where he revisits artifacts destroyed or looted from Iraq and Syria. Through acts of reconstruction, Rakowitz explores cultural memory, remembrance, and the preservation of histories that risk being lost.

Stop by Booth B19 to see the presentation!

Bayt Al Sh’ar in the Almacén del Silo @bienalburgos

Bayt Al Sha’ar (House of Hair) presents a speculative vision of nomadic living informed by research on vernacular architecture and the Bedouin weaving traditions of Al Sadu in Saudi Arabia. Rather than employing traditional hand-loom techniques, Lucy Orta has created a full-scale Bedouin tent woven on a digital loom at the TextielLab research centre. The installation comprises nine jacquard tapestry panels, each measuring 170 × 170 cm.

We are excited to announce the participation in the Bienal Burgos @bienalburgos

Lucy + Jorge Orta’s major textile sculpture ‘Bayt Al Sha’ar (House of Hair)’ will be presented at the inaugural biennale from 24 September 2026 to 10 January 2027.

Bayt Al Sha’ar presents a speculative vision of nomadic living informed by Lucy’s ongoing research into vernacular architecture and the Bedouin weaving traditions of Al Sadu in Saudi Arabia. Rather than employing traditional hand-loom techniques, Orta has created a full-scale Bedouin tent woven on a digital loom at the TextielLab research centre. The installation comprises nine jacquard tapestry panels, each measuring 170 × 170 cm. The imagery depicts a world in transformation, where traditional knowledge and ways of life are increasingly challenged by climate instability, environmental degradation, and conflict.

Join @lucyjorgeorta at 10am in the Almacén del Silo, Burgos.

A glimpse into life at Studio Orta @studioortalesmoulins
The spaces we share, the work we make, and the conversations around the table.

Our studio is part of Les Moulins, a former industrial site where art and everyday life meet. The visit also took us through @galleriacontinua Les Moulins group exhibition “Les 20 ans du Moulin” and into the sculpture garden, home to the gallery’s and our family long-term projects.

Thank you to @destandaardmagazine and @ringogomezjorge for this thoughtful portrait of our family, our studios, and the places around us.

Last chance to see the banners at ‘Botenstoffe’ @halle_14 Leipzig.

In 2018 we celebrated the centenary of the suffrage with women from HMP Downview, honouring the courage of over 100 women who were incarcerated in the notorious Holloway prison fighting for the right to vote.

We discussed what it means to be a woman today, our hopes, role models; and for the Downview women, their aspirations beyond the prison walls.

We made ten powerful banners in the @making.for.change workshop inside the prison so that women’s voices silenced around the world may resonate boldly and courageously.

We organised a march to Holloway prison in remembrance and joined 90,000+ women from across the UK for the mass march organised by @artichoketrust @1418now on 14 June 2018, thanks to @historicengland

The banners continue their journey. Now on view in Leipzig, Germany in the exhibition ‘Botenstoffe’, closing August 8, 2026 HALLE 14 Centre for Contemporay Art - closing August 8.

As part of the Public Projects @seattleartfair we’re thrilled to present the tapestries from our recent NYC exhibition ‘from root to rain’ @janelombardgallery

Our tapestries function as maps drawing on ancient cosmologies and celestial navigation to understand humanity’s place within the natural world. The narrative running across the series reflects the cyclical nature of changing environments from abundance to scarcity, to conflict migration and nomadic living, and the possibility for renewal.

The process of weaving at state-of-the art TexteillLab @textielmuseum has opened up exciting new avenues for visual expression which will develop over the coming year…

We are grateful to Artistic Director @natothompson for inviting us to take part and the amazing team @janelombardgallery 🙏🏼 more to follow….

Today closes ‘Community Threads’ the exhibition, which brings together the results of storytelling in collaboration with the community art centre @casermarcheologica

The assembly of ‘ohel’ dwellings are embroidered with the portraits of inhabitants from Valtiberina. The handwoven linen and hemp cloths surface the contours of their faces with single threads hanging loose, unraveling their stories of belonging. Hand-moulded terracota amulets, like whorls of ancient looms, are suspended from the portraits anchoring each identity to the territory from where they came.
Crafted into fragile enclosures -ohels- the community have assembled in Sanselpolcro to retell their stories.

‘Community Threads’
Exhibition by @lucyjorgeorta curated by Simonetta Carbonaro @casermarcheologica Sansepolcro, Italy.

‘Community Threads’ has been made possible thanks to the extraordinary team Ilaria, Laura, Martina, Alice, Valentina; the generosity of the community who shared their stories and the skilled hands of Studio Orta guided by @margaux.lalanne

‘What is the world that I live in today? I’m trying to respond as quickly as possible to that world. It’s the poetic reaction to the life that we’re given to live’.

—Jorge Orta

Lucy + Jorge Orta (@lucyjorgeorta) are renowned for their socially engaged art, pieces that respond to—and are activated by—the communities in which they are made. Inspired by the couple’s background in fashion and politics, these living works grapple with the ecological and social crises of our time.

Along with their son, the artist Leo Orta (@leortajunior), Lucy + Jorge discusses their lives between Paris and their studio and arts space at Les Moulins (@studioortalesmoulins), a former industrial site in the French countryside where their ‘social sculptures’—including Lucy’s renowned Nexus Architecture (1995)—are newly activated in photographs by Pablo Di Prima (@pablodiprima).

Check out the full Orta family reunion in issue #37 of Apartamento magazine, available now in stores and in our online shop, which includes a curated selection of artworks from the Orta’s archive. by @lucyjorgeorta
