Frieze London | Lucy + Jorge Orta and Michael Rakowitz

At Frieze London, Lucy + Jorge Orta’s Wadi Hanifah Embroidery Landscapes bring together botanical specimens native to Saudi Arabia’s Wadi Hanifah valley and geometric motifs drawn from Al Sadu, the traditional weaving practice of Bedouin women. Combining ecological observation with textile traditions, the works reflect on cultural heritage, resilience, and environmental change.

Also featured are selections from Michael Rakowitz’s ongoing series The invisible enemy should not exist, where he revisits artifacts destroyed or looted from Iraq and Syria. Through acts of reconstruction, Rakowitz explores cultural memory, remembrance, and the preservation of histories that risk being lost.

Stop by Booth B19 to see the presentation!

Four months of “Botenstoffe” brought together six works from “Global Threads”, spanning 13 years of my artistic practice. Thank you for this space!

Thank you to Michael Arzt for the invitation and, above all, for being so open to my ideas and giving me the opportunity to shape and further develop my part of the exhibition.

Thank you to the entire @halle_14 team and the installation team for the great support in bringing it all together!

Thank you to the Digital Photo Lab at HALLE 14 for the short-notice and flexible support – exactly what you need during an exhibition installation!

And a big thank you to the many visitors from Leipzig, across Germany and around the world whom I had the chance to welcome and guide through my works over these four months. There were so many inspiring conversations, questions, encounters and different perspectives on the works.

Thank you to @berenice_gaca_courtin for the great Artist Talk we shared at the finissage, and to Echo Ho @zoonslows for the performance together with Berenice on our last day.

Thank you to all participating artists:
@berenice_gaca_courtin, @kyungahhamstudio , @lucyjorgeorta, @indre_serpytyte, @hussein.shikha, @sabrinaasche

Thank you to @lvz.de for the coverage and to @kreuzer_leipzig for featuring the exhibition.

Svalbard n'a jamais eu d'habitant indigène.

🇬🇧
Svalbard has never had an indigenous inhabitant. No ancestral culture, no people born of this land. Only humans who came, for a century now, to extract something from it: coal, then images, tourism, science.
A polar guide who's lived there for 20 years asks a simple question: however respectful our presence, does it still wear the place down? The warming we bring displaces the land's only true inhabitants, the animals, the only ones actually built for this cold.
In psychology, we find the same tension on a smaller scale: can we love a place, or a person, without eventually shaping it in our image, until it's worn thin?
We'd love to hear your take: can we inhabit a place without slowly undoing it?
