A while ago, a generous person gave me two big boxes of jeans that are well worn and beyond repair or donation. I’m finally working on a denim paper restock (an everything restock actually!), so getting ready to process these in the hollander after the wee squares have had a quick boil with some soda ash to soften and clean them. I have to check the jeans carefully as even 1% or 2% elastane added for stretch means the beater won’t like them! That tiny bit of synthetic fibre completely changes how the fibre absorbs water and breaks down. 100% natural fibre for the win if you want to recycle! #handmadepaper #papermaking @tidekettle taken in Lucy at Tidekettle Paper by @lucypaperbax

Good morning everyone! @tidekettle is open till 4 for the second weekend of @berwickopenstudios. These are the three most faq’s about our paper, to which I’m adding a special one for today. It’s dead seal. I couldn’t see anything on the sand but I could tell by the ecstatic look on Lacey’s face while she was rolling that it was there somewhere. So the fragrance you detect is dead seal mixed with no-rinse dog shampoo. Enjoy! Hopefully less pungent by tomorrow 😊🐾🐾 taken in Lucy at Tidekettle Paper by @lucypaperbax

I just want to take the opportunity to thank @katievandyckfilmsandwebsites for the two reels she has made here at @tidekettle in the last couple of weeks. I’m a bit shy about this stuff, but it gives me a chance to bang on about collaboration! The paper in yesterday’s reel is an unusual one - double thickness laminated card for sketchbook covers so the process looks a bit agricultural 🚜 lots of slurry! An average batch of paper will take 500-750g of dry fibre which is the capacity of my Hollander beater. This stuff takes kilos and kilos of offcuts from @pithsupply and I love it! It only really needs rehydrated as it’s already been processed once. Pink and orange done, next is blue. A destination shop, no question. Everyone I've ever met is basically blown away by what Lucy does. She, and @weebluepress, (also very lovely work), will be taking part in @berwickopenstudios on 26th/27th and 3rd/4th October. They're at 16 Bridge Street in Berwick. Dont miss.

Something new in the shop today! Bridging the gap between a card and a present maybe? Seashore cards using the deckle edges of the paper that get trimmed off while making more elaborate geological pieces. And they are SQUARE! There’s something about a square card 😊. I need to say hi to the people who provided the cellophane bags - Latte Goldstein at @riverdesignuk in Reston gave me a whole lot of bags, cards and envelopes it must be about 8 years ago now when @tidekettle first opened! We are still using them and are grateful each time we pack a card. Some have been donated to other places and used for free kids’ card kits during the pandemic which we stuck to the outside of the shop window!
