This is your sign to climb a volcano 🌋🇬🇹

Fair warning… this was by far the most difficult 36 hours of my life.

• 7-hour hike to basecamp
• 2.5-hour hike to Fuego
• 2.5-hour hike back to basecamp
• 5 hours of sleep
• 2-hour climb to the summit (14,000 ft)
• 2-hour descent

Between almost running out of water, my headlamp dying in total darkness, and battling altitude sickness, there were several moments I wasn’t sure I’d make it. But I pushed through, making the views all the more meaningful. This hike pushed me to my limits, and I grew because of it.

Crazy enough, I did this hike solo—Sean, my travel partner, wasn’t feeling up for it. Looking back, I’m so glad I went. Easily the most rewarding challenge I’ve taken on. Absolutely recommend. If I can do it… you can too.

“If you’ve never done it, you won’t be able to understand it - and if you’ve done it, you’ll never be able to explain it.”

Before I went on Semester at Sea, I had no idea what that meant. And having done it, it makes perfect sense. No matter how much I describe it, I cannot fully express the impact Semester at Sea had on me. But I can try.

I boarded the MV World Odyssey on January 5, 2024, in Bangkok, Thailand. The first day on the ship was overwhelming. I realized I only had 5 days to make friends among 500 students, figure out who I wanted to travel with in our first port of Malaysia, and solidify those plans. I ended up missing one of my flights, which sure was a wake-up call.

Nonetheless, I saw different shades and colors in the world I never knew existed, tried foods I had no idea I would love, and built lifelong friendships and connections along the way.

From watching the sunset in Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya to hiking 6 hours to the Wli Waterfalls in Ghana, I was in awe of how much beauty there is in the world outside of my home.

I made it my goal to connect with as many students, lifelong learners, faculty, and crew as possible. From serving as Sea Captain for the Baltic Sea to nightly poker nights, I made the most of this adventure. Not all days at sea were glamorous, but that’s part of the beauty of it. Something RD David told us sea captains was, “Under pressure, you are not being burned, you’re being forged, and diamonds only come from pressure.”

Semester at Sea, 133 you know me. Thank you to everyone who made this the best semester of my life. This journey is just getting started... 🛳️🌊
