wow, what an experience. to speak for my people was a great honour and to have my kōrero recognised means even more to me 🖤 thank you Whaea Debbie and thank you Youth Parliament. If this event showed us anything it’s that rangatahi voices need to be heard now more than ever. Give us the power to vote and the chance to decide our future ✍️

Decolonise our systems ‼️

Mauri Ora ⚡️ here is my speech which I presented on live tv at Youth Parliament 2022 representing @debbiengarewapacker as her Youth MP ❤️‍🔥

This kōrero spoke to my own experience growing up disconnected from my culture and the journey I had to undergo to reclaim that knowledge. I expressed my concern about the governments failure post colonisation in sustaining tikanga and mātauranga Māori across all our systems ‼️

If you steal something should it not be your responsibility to return it?
Then why hasn’t the government returned all the stolen land, knowledge, and language back to tangata whenua?

This extends to all Pasifika, Indigenous, and minority communities. This speech, I hope, is the start of many conversations to initiate a restructure of our systems so everyone has equal opportunity to succeed 💫 So thankful to everyone who has already helped share this message.

Kā mihi, arohanui. Let’s start DECOLONISING our minds 🧘

WHO ARE THE FALCONS?

Luke Orbell

New to the New Zealand Falcons this year, but not new to rugby, Lukey has been an incredible addition and contributor to our whānau. The kaitiaki of te ao Maori within the Falcons, a better tackler than most of the forwards and our resident show-stopping diva 🫶

@lukeorbell dishes so much Bingham tea he needed an extra slide 😉🦅

Kapa O Aotearoa Kārearea was gifted to the New Zealand Falcons in 2014.

It was composed especially for the New Zealand Falcons by Derek Lardelli and Mikki-Tae Tapara (Tainui Waikato) based on the All Blacks haka Kapa O Ponga. The mana and wairua of this haka is a taonga that the New Zealand Falcons continue to uphold and treasure.

It was an honour to be guided by our kaitiaki @lukeorbell to prepare for this haka, who was joined by fellow kaitiaki @itstiabear when performing and leading our rōpu so beautifully. Both tāne have made incredible contributions to the New Zealand Falcons by being the kaitiaki for Te Ao Māori within our whānau and we could not be more grateful 💚🖤🦅

It is a privilege for all kārearea to get the chance to hold and experience this haka and we know it will stay with every one of us for life.

When your friend makes an edit of you dancing, it would be a crime to keep it in the camera roll 🫣

Lockerroom was a blast 💥 - the energy, vibes, choreography, and support was unmatched 🥹

So grateful for my new found family within @nzfalcons and getting to express myself creatively through dance again. And getting to share in an important kaupapa to fundraise for our travels to @igrbinghamamandacup next week 🏉

Keep posted for how we do in the tournament and in the meantime - hype up this vid 🤭

So I dropped the rugby boots for a little bit and returned to the stage 🏉🕺🏼🤭

I had the best time fundraising for the @nzfalcons for the Bingham Cup happening in 2 weeks. Who knew i’d get to be creative in a sports environment??? 🥳🫶🏼🫪

So proud of my friends, we smashed it ❤️‍🔥 and to @albyyap for giving me the confidence in myself to dance again. Your talent inspires me 🦋

And yes, in gay rugby we do strip shows 🤭 by @lukeorbell

Proud of these @nzfalcons boys for all their hard work, time, heart, bravery and trust in me.

Their performance at the annual @urgeeventsnz locker room fundraiser was absolute fiyah! Thanks Urge for looking after us and putting on a fun evening!

In case you missed it… here are some highlights.

They are the reason I got back into teaching last year… from seeing the boys never ever dancing before to putting on a sell out show is just mind blowing!

Thanks to those who helped film and capture this special night! by @lukeorbell
