The Fall Exhibition at Lula features 6 artists from @the_arts_of_life, guest curated @fabulous.chicago and @zanderraymond.

Arts of Life is a a 501(c)3 non-profit that advances the creative arts community by providing artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities a collective space to expand their practice and strengthen their leadership.

Today, they support over 80 artists across three professional art studios. Each artist has their own studio space and works independently from individualized project plans or receives 1:1 visual arts facilitation to increase their artistic skill set. Artists earn a monthly stipend for participation in the program with eligibility to receive bonuses based on personal annual art sales.

Zander Raymond is an interdisciplinary artist, musician, and curator living and working in Chicago, IL. In his visual work, he improvises with found materials from his day to day to make collages and sculptures that serve as an autobiographical record of experience while pointing toward the unseen. His music is similarly rooted in improvisation, utilizing synthesizers, field recorders, and open-source sound computers to sample, warp, and build sonic images that embrace serendipity and highlight the musicality of the ordinary. In early 2026 he started a curatorial project called fabulous, which primarily is operated out of his apartment.

OPENING RECEPTION
TUESDAY, OCT 5TH | 6-9PM
2537 N KEDZIE BLVD

We hope to see you there.

Born in 1961, Marvin Young is a lifelong resident of Chicago’s South Side. Young has been dedicated to art-making since childhood and joined Arts of Life’s South Side studio in 2024. Intensely observant and drawing constantly, his works exist as an expression and record of both his community and personal experience over the decades.

These quick yet detailed representations of figures and urban landscapes, both imagined and remembered, capture his hometown in a singular voice. His subjects range from checkered taxis to female police officers to the since-demolished public housing project he lived in on Cottage Grove. Join us at LOULOU on October 18th from 4-7pm with photographer Jim Newberry (@ jimnewberry) for an early-evening celebration of his book, “Chicago Music, Seen: 100 Portraits”.

Enjoy a conversation with @soundopinions producer @iamandrewgill, live music by Girls of the Golden West, and bites by the Lula Cafe team for a festive reception celebrating Chicago’s vibrant music scene.

Books will be available at 30% discount. This event is free to attend with limited capacity. RSVP is highly encouraged via the link in our profile!

About the Book:
Photographer Jim Newberry documented Chicago and its musicians for more than thirty years, shooting for the artists and labels that put the city’s music scene on the map in the ‘90s, as well as for the Chicago Reader and other publications. Blending an expert eye with a talent for capturing truth beneath the veneer of performance, Newberry chronicled both the stars and experimental artists of the era with an insider’s aplomb.

Chicago Music, Seen collects images that reveal the diversity, depth, and dynamism of the city’s creative community. The selections reflect Newberry’s gift for intimate and authentic portraiture and his knack for catching many of his subjects in the early years of their careers. Reflections and stories by critics, friends, and by the artists themselves accompany the images.

Distinctive and vivid, Chicago Music, Seen presents, as Grammy award-winning author Bob Mehr says in his foreword, “a critical cultural history of a city, but moreover, a testament to a gifted Chicago artist in his own right.”

A few weeks ago, we invited Pierce Abernathy (@pierceabernathy) to Lula to celebrate the release of his new cookbook, “Every Leaf, Every Stem“. Our menu for the evening included specials inspired by a few of his recipes.

Pierce’s approach to cooking reminds us of one of many guiding principles we have at Lula: cooking with the seasons is the best way to get to know people who grow your food. The farmers markets, neighborhoods, and windowsill gardens…they all matter.

Thanks to Pierce and his team for saving a spot at Lula on the tour, and to all who came out and purchased a book. Don’t miss our next collab dinner benefitting @comfort_station on Tuesday, November 10th at Lula. Featured Chefs include Diana Dávila (@mitocaya), Joe Frillman (@daisieschicago), Ethan Pikas (@cellardoorprovisions), Matthias Merges (@billysundaychicago), and Zeeshan Shah & Yoshi Yamada (@superkhana).

Come hang out on Tuesday, October 6th from 6-9PM for our opening reception celebrating the new Fall Exhibit at Lula: a group show featuring select artists of @the_arts_of_life, guest-curated in collaboration with @fabulous_chicago, @zanderraymond, and @mausikaitis. Free bites, cash bar, and plenty of time to linger and chat with the artists.

The show includes work by Candace Turner, Deaudre Steele, Tim Stone, Isamu Guy Conners, Marvin Young, and Richard Auth.

Arts of Life is an Inclusive Art Studio & Community Program in Chicago, providing artists with disabilities a space to create, exhibit, and thrive. They’re doing amazing work, and we couldn’t be more excited about this group show.

All work is for sale and available at the link in our profile. Proceeds are split 60% to artists and 40% to Arts of Life, which goes back into supporting the program’s general operating expenses. taken in Lula Cafe by @lulacafe

We’re thrilled to welcome Selina Trepp (@selinatrepp) and Mary Eleanor Wallace (@mary_eleanor_) for our next L. Soirée.

Using fabric, projection, and light, they will transform LOULOU by Lula — and our bodies — into a new immersive world. We’ll gather around a communal meal by Lula Cafe as the evening unfolds, while Amalea Tshilds (@atshilds) accompanies their vision with music.

This dinner is an occasion, a celebration, an affair inside the garden of delight. Dress up, shine your light, this is the moment that the beautiful clothes you have in your closet that you never wear get to come out, this is their occasion. As the light is changing, colors deepening before we fade into the cool of winter, we gather in admiration of each other.
