Today is reflection day. Dad died three years ago today. A lot to think about.Five weeks ago I opened @lulushokudo, a micro-restaurant run from my home. I mean, there are micro bakeries…so why not micro restaurants?I’ve wanted to open a shokudo-style place since I bought this house four years ago. Plans were drawn, planning permission received, it was going to be a really cool spot. Then… you know, shit happened, and the idea was put aside. As the years passed, I kept thinking about it, but I also got more scared to bring it to life. After a sad breakup at the end of 2025, I needed something that wasn’t about kids or romance. I kept coming back to the shokudo idea. Finally I just said f it — let’s put it out into the big scary world and see who would actually show up.In five weeks I’ve prepared close to 100 teishoku sets. I’ve met people from all walks of life. They shared their stories with me and told me my miso soup was the 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲’𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐝.I learned about foster parenting, hairpin collections, druids and mistletoe, amazing Groupon deals, and other things I never expected to learn in my dining room. I’ve been given flowers, chocolate cakes, teas, and most recently, the best pineapple cakes I’ve ever eaten.I’ve worked on many exciting projects over the years, but what I’ve really missed is 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.Truth is, I feel quite lonely. My friends are scattered across the UK and the world, and even after four years here, I can still feel a bit invisible. What started as an experiment has filled me with energy and surprisingly, hope. When I return from Taiwan, Lulu Shokudō will continue in a new format and become my main focus. I’ve been asked to open my own spot for a long time. This isn’t the traditional way, but it’s my way, and it works for where my life is right now.And honestly? 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰, 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡.If you’d like to support me, please follow @lulushokudo, tell friends, neighbours, colleagues, random strangers or just come eat some delicious food and share a little of yourself at my table!Tiffany by @lulushokudo
