🌟 Opening soon: Lunita-July Dorn (@lunitajulydorn), ‘Like a Bird on a Wire’, her first institutional solo exhibition, opens at the @achimfreyerstiftung, Berlin, on 12 September on the occasion of @berlinartweek 2026. Curated by @sabine.bayer.

Bringing together paintings, installations, and works on paper, the exhibition explores closeness and distance, security and uncertainty, memory and presence. Moving between belonging and estrangement, Dorn’s works create spaces in which inner and outer realities overlap, and where the familiar can suddenly become strange. The exhibition takes its title from Leonard Cohen’s ‘Bird on the Wire’, written when he was almost the same age as Dorn. Like Cohen, Dorn works through the tension between a youthful desire for freedom, the vulnerable need for a place of one’s own, and the obligations of everyday life.

Zur Berlin Art Week 2026 präsentiert das Achim Freyer Kunsthaus die erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung der jungen Malerin Lunita-July Dorn (*1999). In großformatigen Gemälden und Zeichnungen macht sich Dorn immer wieder zur imaginären Protagonistin. Ob einzeln oder in Vielzahl – ihr eigenes Porträt bildet den Ausgangspunkt für eindringliche malerische Selbstbefragung und anmutige, autofiktionale Erzählungen. Vor- und Überzeichnungen, Schichtungen, Ausstreichungen und wieder freigelegte Passagen bleiben in ihren Werken bewusst sichtbar. So erscheint ihre Suche nach Identität nicht als abgeschlossen, sondern als Zustand permanenter Wandlung.

For Berlin Art Week 2026, we are delighted to present the first institutional solo exhibition by the young painter Lunita-July Dorn (b. 1999). In large paintings and drawings, Dorn repeatedly portrays herself as a fictional protagonist. Whether alone or in groups, her own portrait serves as the starting point for a captivating painterly self-reflection and graceful, autofictional narratives. In her works, sketches and overpaintings, layers, cross-outs, and passages brought back to light remain deliberately visible. Thus, her search for identity does not appear to be complete, but rather a state of constant transformation.
