“Of course it’s me, but it’s not really about self-portraiture as such.” @lunitajulydorn

In her paintings, Lunita-July Dorn moves between shifting identities, personal memories and imagined realities, embracing the unexpected rather than working towards a predetermined outcome. In her first institutional solo exhibition, Like a Bird on a Wire, at the Achim Freyer Kunsthaus, her works enter into dialogue with a collection as unconventional and layered as her own visual world. @achimfreyerstiftung

In our latest 5 Questions, @lunitajulydorn talks with @meandthecomputer about the freedom of losing control, the many selves we contain, and why a painting that surprises its maker is far from a finished story.

Like a Bird on a Wire is on view at the Achim Freyer Kunsthaus until December 13.

WEIBLICHES SELBSTBILD UND SELBSTINSZENIERUNG
Ein Gesprächsabend mit Laura Helena Wurth

📅 Sonntag, 8. November 2026, 17 Uhr
📍 Achim Freyer Kunsthaus, Berlin

Moderation: Sabine Bayer

Wir freuen uns auf einen anregenden Gesprächsabend!

@lunitajulydorn’s work is included in ‘Bodies that Speak’ at @hauskunstmitte, Berlin, on view through 12 December.

Bringing together 17 Berlin-based artists across four generations, ‘Bodies that Speak’ explores the human body as image, material, medium and carrier of memory. Across painting, photography, sculpture and performative practices, the exhibition considers the body as a site of vulnerability, transformation, social pressure and self-determination.

September.

Ach, so geht also auch! Große Überschneidungen auch in der Sammlung: von German Pop, Polke, Köthe Warhol, Lichtenstein über Gugging bis Schröder-Sonnenstern. Impressive.

✨Now open: @lunitajulydorns erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung „Like a Bird on a Wire @berlinartweek

—

Bringing together paintings, installations, and works on paper, the exhibition explores closeness and distance, security and uncertainty, memory and presence.

Moving between belonging and estrangement, Dorn’s works create spaces in which inner and outer realities overlap, and where the familiar can suddenly become strange.

The exhibition takes its title from Leonard Cohen’s ‘Bird on the Wire’, written when he was almost the same age as Dorn. Like Cohen, Dorn works through the tension between a youthful desire for freedom, the vulnerable need for a place of one’s own, and the obligations of everyday life.
