If October had a window, this is where I’d find it - open to quiet mornings, terracotta rooftops and an endless blue beyond.

I set out for a morning walk and let the village lead the way. Past green shutters and sun-warmed stone, the sea kept appearing between the rooftops, making it impossible not to stop.

And I made myself a promise: to always leave a little more time for mornings like this. taken in Luštica Bay, Montenegro by @lusticabay

There is a whole world waiting on the other side of “I’ve never tried that before.”

Perhaps it begins with a golf club in your hands, the sea stretching out beyond the green. Or the first time you take the helm of a sailboat, learning to follow the wind rather than fight it.

Maybe it happens while piecing together a mosaic, cycling through the peninsula, or simply sitting in the morning sun with a cappuccino, watching the world go by.

For travel writer @jelenakarakas, a journey through Luštica Bay becomes an exploration of what it means to feel truly alive. A reminder that curiosity has no age, that being a beginner can be a beautiful thing, and that sometimes the greatest discovery is learning to be fully present.

Because life isn’t only about how far we’ve come. It’s also about everything we still have the courage to try.

For a moment, the whole world is no bigger than a golf ball and a hole in the green.

You study the line. Trust your stroke. Watch it roll.

And then, just like that, the world opens up again - to the sea, the sky, the warmth of the afternoon and a coffee waiting to be enjoyed.

They call it an Indian summer - those borrowed days of warmth when autumn arrives, but summer refuses to follow the calendar.

And by the sea, you can see why. Children are still laughing as the waves chase their feet, swimmers disappear into the blue, and afternoons still carry that familiar feeling of having nowhere else to be.

Perhaps summer hasn’t overstayed at all. Perhaps it simply knows this is a beautiful place to linger. taken in Luštica Bay, Montenegro by @lusticabay

To care for trees that still remember your grandparents’ hands is to keep part of them close.

For the Moric family, the olive groves of Luštica carry far more than a harvest. Among trees that have stood for centuries, each season continues a story shaped by grandparents and grandchildren, dry-stone walls built by hand, and the belief that caring for the land means thinking beyond your own lifetime.

Ilija Moric grew up learning the rituals of the harvest from his family. Today, their ancestral groves produce organic olive oil, while old traditions find new expression through workshops, local flavours and experiences that invite others to discover the peninsula through their hands, senses and stories.

Because here, an olive tree is never simply a tree. It is nourishment, memory and a connection between those who came before and those still to come.

The sunset has started arriving earlier. We’ve started walking slower.

Perhaps that’s our way of meeting the season halfway - letting autumn shorten the days, while we find every excuse to make the evenings last.

One more walk. One more horizon turning gold. One more little piece of summer carried into October. taken in Luštica Bay, Montenegro by @lusticabay

There’s a wind that arrives at the end of summer.

It moves differently - through open windows, between the pages of unfinished books, into sails already chasing the horizon.
Not quite a goodbye. More like the beginning of another story. taken in Luštica Bay, Montenegro by @lusticabay

Here, the seasons are lived through flavour - gathered from the land, drawn from the sea, and shared around the table.

Autumn brings pomegranate, cinnamon and quince, while winter returns to recipes that have warmed family tables for generations. Spring arrives in handfuls of wild herbs gathered from the hillsides. Summer tastes of mussels pulled from the water and fish cooked simply with olive oil and salt

For chef Damir Moskov, cooking through the seasons is also a way of travelling through Boka’s memory. Alongside journalist Mašo Čekić, he traces the ingredients, recipes and stories that have survived not because they were written down, but because people continued to cook them, share them and make them their own.

At his Wild Table, tradition is never frozen in the past. It is rediscovered, reimagined and brought back to the table - with the feeling behind each dish left intact.

I see the leaves beginning to turn, little signs that autumn is on its way.

But then I look towards the sea - sunlight sparkling on the water, people disappearing into the blue, others lingering by the shore as if summer still has something left to say.

Perhaps here, it simply takes a little longer to say goodbye. taken in Luštica Bay, Montenegro by @lusticabay

Five more minutes, we say. We both know we don’t mean it.

There’s dancing on the terrace, wet feet where they shouldn’t be and laughter carrying in from somewhere outside.
We could call them back. Instead, we watch from a distance and let the afternoon run a little longer. taken in Luštica Bay, Montenegro by @lusticabay

The heartbeat of Boka lives in the notes passed from one generation to the next.

Here, music drifts through stone streets and waterfront squares, carrying the spirit of the bay through “klapa” voices, historic brass bands and the Boka Symphony Orchestra. It is part of celebrations, ceremonies and everyday life - a tradition shaped by memory, community and a deep sense of place.

Young musicians learn beside those who have played for decades, adding their own voice to a sound that continues to evolve while remaining unmistakably Boka.

I’ve heard so many people say September is their favourite month.

It somehow brings out the best parts of summer - the sea is still warm, the light is softer, the beaches are quieter, and the days feel easier. There’s still time for long swims, late lunches and hours by the water, just without the rush of peak season. Everything feels a little more effortless, a little more yours.
Now I understand what they mean. September might be my favourite month too. taken in Luštica Bay, Montenegro by @lusticabay
