"A few more stills from #Skindeep, shot by me. The environment we were working with had a lot of white walls and dull fluorescent lighting, so we wanted to add some visual interest without going overboard. The director and I discussed a grungy green look while still retaining the skin color—something bold, slightly harsh, and dramatic. I’m really happy with how it turned out and how it adds to the film’s overall atmosphere!"

I had the pleasure to work with @makewayfilm and @ninanoelraaijmakers for this awesome 3LAB pilot.
the director, Nina, and i shared the idea to get it quite grungy and green and just make it a bit nasty in it's sharpness and midtone contrast. this is to emphasise the story which is about the ballet scene which can look beautiful but is also quite hard.

Happy Halloween!

Still love this particular shot that I made for the “Witte wieven” movie. We wanted it to feel atmospheric as if it was lit by the moonlight but not get it too sharp as it would ruin the positive mood in this part. The Key light was done by shooting two aputure 600X with fresnel into Polyboards on wind-ups which were a few meters apart. The fog (by the great @ruudverbakel and @melvindierdorp) made sure that these sources would be even softer and create this great atmosphere. I wanted a nice but very subtle moonlight as backlight so we used an aputure 1200d and aimed it into a big CRLS DIF 3 on a 5 segment roller to get a soft/angled beam towards the main talent but kept it a bit Sourcy. As ambient we placed an arri M18 on the other side of the camera shooting up into the trees. The trees would bounce back a little bit of light but also if I would point the camera a bit up I could still see details in the forest.

This setup made it great to backlight the image but keep some details in the front. Check out the last still as well in this post.

I’m very excited to finally share the first lighting breakdown of @wittewievenfilm directed by @didier_konings_art .
For those of you who haven’t seen the film, it’s available on NPO start!

INT. CHURCH. DAY.

What are the only light sources available in this time period. The sun, the moon (technically the sun) and fire.
So with this daytime interior our only sources are the sun and fire.
During prep our DOP @luukdek en me came to the conclusion that we needed a large fire source from the ceiling and multiple smaller sources all over the space. Another important source was a ray of sun hitting our talent.

For the large fire source we went for a square configuration of 4 Infinibars. This created a large top source that still created hard and interesting shadows. Another benefit of these lights is the ability to have a pixelated fire effect that danced around the room.
A 600D pro + F10 came in through the top window to emulate a “holy” ray of sunlight, with was very fitting for the type of scene.

These two sources were the base for this location, now it’s time to fill in the details.
The art department brought in amazing hand crafted candles and placed them around the set, a great oppertunity for us the emulate more fire light! They also placed the outer walls, we could use the cracks bring in more daylight from outside.
As you can see in the diagram we added an light wherever there were candles, It was so cool to see how it all worked together to create this look.

The scene still needed more contrast, so we blacked out one of the walls and added a Nova 600 backlight for the close-up.
With those last details in place it was time to shoot the scene and for me to get a cup of coffee!
